Kamada Ekadashi 2024: History & Significance

In a year, 24 Ekadashis are observed, each with its unique name and significance. Kamada Ekadashi marks the first Ekadashi of the Hindu year, celebrated just after Chaitra Navratri and Rama Navami.

According to the Hindu calendar, Kamada Ekadashi occurs on the eleventh day of the Shukla paksha in the Chaitra month. In the Gregorian calendar, this corresponds to March or April.

The Varaha Purana, an Indian epic, narrates the tale of Lalit, a singer, and his dancer wife, Lalita, who served in King Pundarika's court. One day, Lalit became distracted during a performance upon realizing Lalita was absent, causing him to miss a few beats.

Seizing the moment, a serpent named Karotaka falsely accused Lalit to the king of being more attentive to his wife than his performance. The king, swayed by the serpent's words, cursed Lalita to become a ghastly man-eater.

In search of a remedy, Lalita visited Guru Shringi's ashram, where he advised her to observe a fast on Ekadashi to receive Lord Vishnu's blessings. Moved by her devotion, Lord Vishnu lifted the curse from Lalit, restoring his human form. Traditionally, devotees fast on Kamada Ekadashi to cleanse themselves of sins, believing that fasting and praying to Lord Vishnu can alleviate their sufferings.

Kamada Ekadashi, the inaugural Ekadashi of the Hindu New Year, is believed to absolve sins and aid in achieving salvation, breaking the cycle of birth and death. It is also thought that childless couples who observe this fast will be blessed with a child.

Devotees pray to Lord Vishnu on all Ekadashis, and on Kamada Ekadashi, it is believed to grant all worldly wishes of the devotees, with 'Kamada' signifying 'granting of desires.'

Kamada Ekadashi Rituals

On this sacred day, devotees rise early, bathe, and then perform puja. They present yellow garments, prasad, incense, sandalwood paste, tulsi leaves, and flowers to Lord Vishnu. A special bhog is also offered, and chants of Lord Vishnu's mantras and the Kamada Ekadashi Katha, as well as the Sri Narayan Aarti, are recited to honor the deity. The fast is broken the following day during Parana.

These idols are then paraded on a chariot by the faithful in a procession termed rath yatra. Along the route, religious verses are chanted as devotees pray for his blessings to lead a healthy and prosperous life. Mahashivaratri festival is one of the major Hindu festivals dedicated to god  Shiva. Mahashivratri means the “big night of Shiva”, it is celebrated during Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi in the Hindu month of Phalgun or 13th or the 14th night of the new moon, corresponding to February-March in Gregorian calendar. The festival is celebrated on the night. Lord Brahma (Creator), Lord Vishnu (Preserver) and Lord Shiva (Destroyer) are the Hindu Trinity gods worshipped by Hindu people.

Mahashivratri Fast/Shivratri Importance

On Mahashivratri day, Hindu temples are thronged by the devotees to worship and carry pujas to Lord Shiva throughout the day. People chant the divine Shiva panchakshari mantra of 'Om Namah Shivaya'. Many people also observe a fast (upvas) for the whole day, not eating anything other than fruits, tea, milk, coffee and water. Popularly, on fasting or vrat days, people prefer and use sendha namak (rock salt) instead of the common salt.

The Shiva Purana states conducting of special pujas every 3 hours on the day of Mahashivratri. For Shiva pujas people do Abhisheks, where the Shiva Lingam or lingum is worshipped by pouring milk, yogurt, water, ghee, sugar and honey. On this day of Maha Shivaratri, devotees sing bhajans, aartis and chant mantras of the Shiva Shankar to seek the blessings of the almighty.

The MahaShivaratri festival is observed in honour of Lord Shiva and on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati. It is also believed that Lord Shiva performed the Tandava Nritya on this day. The great holy festival of MahaShivaratri holds special meaning for the Hindu ladies. It is believed that any lady who pray to Goddess Parvati also known as 'Gaura', the giver of 'suhag' for good husbands, marital bliss and a long, prosperous married life.

Names of Shiva

"Shankar", "Mahesh", "Neelakanth", "Bholenath", "Shambhu Kailasheshwar", "Umanath", "Nataraj", “trimbakeshwar” are a few of the many names of Shiva.

Mahashivratri Story

In Mahabharata, Bhishma, while resting on the bed of arrows referred to the observance of Maha Shivaratri by King Chitrabhanu. The story is as follows There was a time when King Chitrabhanu of Ikshvaku dynasty, who ruled Jambudvipa observed fast with his wife, the day being the day of Maha Shivaratri. The sage Ashtavakra came to the king’s court and asked the purpose of his observing the past. King Chitrabhanu explained that he got the gift of remembering the incidents of his previous life.

The King said to the sage that he was a hunter in Varanasi known by the name of Suswara. He killed and sell birds and animals to earn his livelihood. One day when he was roaming through the forests in search of any animal, due to darkness of night, he was unable to return home, so he took shelter and climbed over a tree. It was a Bael tree. He shot a deer previously on that day and he bundled and tied it to a branch on the tree. He was kept awake throughout the whole night because of hunger and thirst. He was worried and shed profuse tears at the thought of his poor wife and children who were also starving and anxiously waiting for him to come. Just to pass away the time, he started engaging himself in plucking the Bael leaves and dropping them onto the ground.

He returned home the next day, sold the deer, bought some food for the whole family. As he was about to break his nightlong fast, a stranger came and begged for food. The hunter served the food first to the stranger and then he had his own.

He saw two messengers of Lord Shiva at the time of his death. They came to conduct his soul to the abode of Lord Shiva. He learnt only then the great merit he had earned by the unconscious worship of Lord Shiva Shankar during that night of Maha Shivaratri. He came to know by the messengers that there was a Shiva Lingam at the bottom of the tree. The leaves he dropped fell on the Shiva Lingam and his tears fell onto the Lingam and washed it. Moreover, he had fasted all day and all night. Thus, the story’s conclusion was he unconsciously worshiped the Lord, lived in the abode of the Lord Shiva and enjoyed divine blessings for long ages and now he has been reborn as Chitrabhanu.

The Purnima day is celebrated as Holika Dahan in different regions. In Holashtak, some people decorate the branch of a tree with colorful pieces of clothes. Everyone ties a piece of cloth and that is buried underground.

Holashtak period is considered inauspicious in Hindu mythology as this is the period when Lord Shiva killed Kamadeva and this is same period when Prahalada was given immense troubles by his father Hiranyakashipu and his father's sister Holika. Holashtak period is therefore considered inauspicious for performing auspicious ceremonies like marriage, housewarming, mundan ceremony or any of the 16 Hindu sanskars, starting of new business etc. During the Holashtak period, people must considered performing Daan – doing charity.

Ratha Saptami 2024 Date

Ratha Saptami, Ratha Saptami 2024 Date

Saptami Tithi is dedicated to Lord Surya. Shukla Paksha Saptami tithi in Magha month is known as Ratha Saptami or Magha Saptami. It is believed that Lord Surya Dev started enlightening the whole world on Ratha Saptami day which is considered as birth day of God Surya. Thus this day is also known as Surya Jayanti. Suryadev was born to Sage Kashyap and Aditi. Normally, Ratha Saptami falls two days after Shri Panchami or Vasant Panchami.

Ratha Saptami Significance & Rituals

Ratha Saptami is made of two words- ‘Ratha’ means Chariot and ‘Saptami’ means seventh. Ratha Saptami or Surya Jayanti is highly auspicious day and it is considered as auspicious as Surya Grahan for Dan-Punya activities. A person can get rid of all type of sins by worshipping Lord Surya and observing fast on this day. It is believed that seven types of sins done, knowingly, unknowingly, by words, by body, by mind, in current birth and in previous births are washed off by worshipping Lord Surya on the day of Ratha Saptami.

The Ratha Saptami day also denotes the journey of Lord Surya to the Northern hemisphere in his chariot. It marks the arrival of summer and indicates a change in the climatic conditions across the regions of Southern India. It also symbolizes the beginning of the harvest season for the farmers.

A person should take bath during Arunodaya on the day of Ratha Saptami. Ratha Saptami Snan is one of the important rituals and is suggested during Arunodaya only. Arunodaya period prevails for four Ghatis (approx. one and half hour for Indian locations if we consider one Ghati duration as 24 minutes) before sunrise. If a person takes bath before sunrise during Arunodaya, it keeps the person healthy and free from all types of ailments and diseases. Because of this great belief Ratha Saptami is also known as Arogya Saptami. Taking bath in water body like Ganga river, canal etc. is preferred over taking bath at home. We have listed here Arunodaya period and sunrise time for most cities across the world.

After taking bath Lord Surya should be worshipped during sunrise by offering Arghyadan (अर्घ्यदान) to Him. Arghyadan is performed by slowly offering water to Lord Surya from small Kalash with folded hand in Namaskar Mudra while facing Lord Sun in standing position. After this ignite a pure Ghee diya and worship Sun God with Kapoor, Dhup, and red flowers. By doing morning Snan, Dan-Punya and Arghyadan to Suryadev, who is considered an incarnation of Sri Vishnu, one is bestowed with long life, good health and prosperity.

The day of Ratha Saptami is also known as Magha saptami, Achala Saptami, Suryaratha saptami and aarogya saptami. It is believed that worshipping Lord Suryadev on Ratha Saptami gives a person happiness, health, wealth, prosperity and children.

A one-day Brahmotsavam is held in Tirumala Tirupati Temple (TTD Andhra Pradesh) on Ratha Saptami and grand festivities are also held at Shri Manguesh Temple, Mallikarjun Temple and also in various regions of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. On this day, devotees pay their tributes to the Sun god and thank him for making human race survive and flourish. Chanting Gayatri Mantra, Suryadev mantra, Suryadev chalisa, Surya Sahasranama, Suryashtakam and Suryadev aarti is considered very auspicious on this day. Aditya hridaya stotra (आदित्य हृदय स्तोत्र)  dedicated to Sun God can also be read or listen to.
