Mauni Amavasya falls in the middle of Magha month and also known as Maghi Amavasya as per North Indian calendar. People all over India take dip in the holy river Ganga on the day of Mauni Amavasya though it is sacred to take bath in Ganga and other holy rivers throughout in the month of Magha. Those who can't take a dip in the Ganga water pour drops of Gangotri water/ Ganga water in their buckets while bathing. The daily bathing ritual begins on Paush Purnima and ends on Magha Purnima day.
Mauni Amavasya Significance
- It is believed that the water of most sacred and holy river in Hinduism, Ganga, turns into nectar on Mauni Amavasya day. This is the belief and that's why Mauni Amavasya day is regarded as the most important day in Hindu calendar to take holy dip in the Ganga waters.Mauni Amavasya is the most important bathing day at Prayagraj during Kumbh Mela and known as the day of Amrit Yoga and the day of Kumbh Parva.
Mauni Amavasya is also known as Mauni Amavas (मौनी अमावस). The name "Mauni" itself means silence in Hinduism when people take pledge to observe one day fasting by not uttering a word throughout the day.
