Shani Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Shanidev. Shani Jayanti is also known by the name of Shani Amavasya. Shani Jayanti is observed on Amavasya Tithi during Jyeshtha month as per North Indian Purnimant calendar. Shani Jayanti falls on Amavasya Tithi during Vaishakha month as per South Indian Amavasyant calendar. Actually Shani Jayanti falls on the same day in both type of calendars, only the month name is different. Shani Jayanti coincides with Vat Savitri Vrat observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya in North Indian states.

On Shani Jayanti day, one can perform Hawan, Homam and Yagya to get the blessings of Shanidev. Shani Tailabhishekam and Shani Shanti Puja are performed during Shani Jayanti. To remove the negative effects of Shani Dosha also known as Sade Sati in one's kundali, these Shani puja's are performed. Shani Jayanti is also known as Shanishchara Jayanti, Sani Jayanthi, Shani Amavasya, Shanishchari Amavasya .

Lord Shani is known as "Suryaputra" or the son of Lord Sun and rules planet Saturn and weekday Saturday. Strong Shani bhakts observe fast to appease Lord Shani and a lot of people can be seen visiting  Shani temples to seek blessings of Shanidev bhagwan. Lord Shani believes in fair justice and if he is impressed by the devotee blesses him/her with good luck and fortune. People, who do not get blessings of Lord Shani, can be seen working hard for years without getting any reward for a long time.
