Kokila Vrat 2024 Date
Kokila Vrat is observed on Ashadha Purnima, though started a day earlier. Kokila Vrat should be observed only when Ashadha Masa is leaped. As per this belief, whenever Ashadha is leaped, Kokila Vrat should be observed during normal Masa and not during Adhik Masa. This belief is supported especially in North Indian states. However, in some regions, especially in Southern and Western parts of India, Kokila Vrat is performed annually on Ashadha Purnima.
Kokila Vrat is dedicated to Goddess Sati and Lord Shiva. The name Kokila refers to Indian bird cuckoo and is associated with Goddess Sati. As per a legend associated with Kokila Vrat, Goddess Sati immolated herself when Her father insulted Lord Shiva. After that, Goddess Sati spent 1000 celestial years as a cuckoo before she got back her shape and merged with Lord Shiva.
Kokila Vrat is mainly observed by women. In some regions, the Vrat is observed for a month from Ashadha Purnima to Shravan Purnima. During Kokila fasting, women wake up early and take bath in nearby river or water body. After bath women make an idol of cuckoo with clay and worship it.
It is believed that women who observe Kokila Vrat will be Akhand Saubhagyavati. This means that those who keep Kokila fasting will never go through widowhood phase in her life and would always die before her husband. It is also believed that worshiping an idol of cuckoo made of clay during Kokila Vrat will help in getting loving and caring husband. Observer of Kokila vrat is blessed with happiness in married life and early marriage for unmarried.
Usually, Guru Purnima and Kokila Vrat are observed on the same day, but sometimes Kokila Vrat can also take place a day before Guru Purnima as per starting of Chaturdashi Tithi.
How to Observe Kokila Vrat?
This fast also improves a woman’s personality and beauty. It is considered good to bathe with herbs on this day.
Women who observe the Kokila Vrat must follow certain bathing rituals as follows : For the first eight days they should apply Amla paste on their entire body and then take a bath. After this, they should take a bath using medicines such as Koot, Jatmasi, raw and dry turmeric, Mura, Shilajit, Sandalwood, Vach, Champak and Nagarmotha for another eight days.
After this is done they should take a bath using herbs for another eight days. Then for the last six days, they should use sesame seeds, Amla and all medicines while bathing. Every day, after bathing, a cuckoo should be worshipped. On the last day, the cuckoo should be beautified and donated to either a Brahmin or the mother-in-law and the father-in-law.
