Tulsidas (1497-1623 C.E.), renowned for his great devotion towards Lord Rama, was a Hindu saint and a poet. Tulsidas Jayanti is observed on the seventh day (saptami) of the bright half of the Hindu month of Shravan which usually falls in July or August. Tulsidas composed different works and contributed to Hindu literature through his poetic works but he is best known as the author of the epic Ramcharitmanas, the Sanskrit Ramayana in the Awadhi language, making it accessible to a larger audience. The popularization of the Ramcharitmanas led to the Ramayana's eventual prominence in Indian popular culture.
Tulsidas also known as Goswami Tulsidas, was acclaimed to be a reincarnation of Maharishi Valmiki, the composer of the original Ramayana in Sanskrit. He is also considered to be the composer of Hanuman Chalisa, a popular devotional hymn in Awadhi dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Tulsidas poetry and writings are characterised by their spiritual depth, devotion to Rama and a focus on moral and ethical values.
Where was Tulsidas born?
Atmaram Dubey, a Brahmin, and his wife Hulsi had Tulsidas in Sookar Kshetra Soron, which is now a part of the Kasganj district in Uttar Pradesh and is situated along the banks of the holy Ganga. The prevailing wisdom holds that Tulsidas was carried by his mother for a full year before being born. Surprisingly, he had teeth when he was born, and instead of sobbing, he spoke the word "Rama." He was given the name Rambola, which means "the one who took the name, Rama," in its literal sense.
Tulsidas spent most of his life in the holy city of Varanasi. The famous Tulsi Ghat on the Ganges River in Varanasi is named after him. Tulsidas also founded the famous Sankatmochan Temple dedicated to Hanuman God. Tulsidas is thought to have lived between (1497 and 1623 C.E. ), while the exact dates are unknown.
How did Rambola transform into Tulsidas?
His parents left him due to a flaw in his astrological chart. After that, his mother's maid reared him. But once she passed away, he roamed aimlessly and subsisted by accepting handouts. He was afterwards adopted by a saint by the name of Narharidas, who later on became his spiritual father.
Tulsidas - One of the Greatest Sri Rama's Devotee
The songs of Tulsidas praised Shri Rama, Lord Vishnu's eighth manifestation. The Ramayana was written in Sanskrit by Sage Valmiki, who is said to have been the author-saint. Tulsidas reportedly received the good fortune to see both Hanuman and his Ishta Devta, Shri Rama.
He first encountered Ram-Bhakt Hanuman in the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple in contemporary Varanasi. He was the author of the Hanuman Chalisa. The Mughal emperor Akbar is claimed to have imprisoned him for forty days; it was at this time that the hymn honoring Hanuman was written.
Tulsidas' compositions
Ramlalla Nahachhu, Barvai Ramayan, Ramagya Prashna, Parvati Mangal, and Janaki Mangal are among the works by Tulsidas that were written in Awadhi, whereas Krishna Gitavali, Gitavali, Sahitya Ratna, Dohavali, Vinaya Patrika, and Vairagya Sandipani were written in Braj Bhasha. One of his best works is the well-known bhajan Thumak Chalat Ramchandra, which celebrates Ram Lala's youth.
