Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi is observed by the devotees of Lord Ganesha every year. The Chaturthi tithi is dedicated to the lord of wisdom, Lord Ganesha. The day falls on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase). If Sankashti Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi.

Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi is observed on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Phalguna as per Purnimant calendar . Lord Ganesha devotees observe Sankashti Chaturthi fast so that they can please the god. Sankashti Chaturthi is celebrated 12 times every year. The chaturthi tithi that comes in the month of Phalguna, as per Purnimant calendar or Magha, Krishna Paksha as per the Amavasyant calendar, is called Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi or Dwijapriya Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi.

Significance of Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi 

Lord Ganesh is also regarded as the Dwijapriya Maha Ganapati.The devotees observe a fast and pray to Maha Ganapati so that their difficulties could be ended and bring them peace and prosperity.

Lord Ganesha is often called as ‘Dukhharta’ and ‘Vighnaharta’ which means that he takes away the pain, hardships and remove any obstacles from the life of people.

The Chaturthi tithi starts at 9:56 PM on Feb 19, 2022 and will  end at 09:05 PM on Feb 20, 2022.

Devotees offer water with sesame seeds, durva grass, til ke ladoos to Sri Ganesh during the puja rituals at the time of starting the fast and breaking it. The Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi fast is observed till the sighting of the moon. People observing the fast must donate sesame seeds to others on Sankashti Chaturthi.

How is Dwijapriya Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?

Devotees of Lord Ganesh worship his another form called Dwijapriya Maha Ganapati. As a form of worship, they observe a fast and pray to Maha Ganpati to ease their hardships and bring them prosperity. Lord Ganesh is considered to be ‘Dukhharta’ and ‘Vighnaharta’ which means that he is believed to be the divine entity that can take away the pain from the life of people.

Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat Rules

  • Maintain celibacy.
  • Wake up early in the morning and take a bath. 
  • Do not consume rice, wheat and lentils in any form. You may have fruits, milk or vrat recipes.
  • Chant 'OM Ganeshaya Namah' or any other Ganesh Mantra's.
  • Do not ever consume tobacco and alcohol on this day.

Dwijapriya Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi

The best time to perform any puja can be Abhijit Muhurat. So, Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi Puja can be done during Abhijeet or Vijaya Muhurat. First close your eyes and do some mantra jaap, invoke Lord Ganesha and pray to him with folded hands. Light a ghee diya in front of the Ganesha's idol or picture.

Salutations to the one who has a curved trunk, and a huge body, the one who radiates the glow of millions of Suns, and to the one who removes obstacles. Bless me before all my endeavours always and forever.

OM, Glory to the one who has one tusk and a curved trunk, I bow before you to get blessed by your grace for an illuminated life.

  • Offer Naivedhya (bhog) consisting of Modaks, Lord Ganesha's favourite food preparation. You may even offer Boondi Laddoo.
  • Offer Shri phal (a coconut broken into two and bananas, paan, supari and Dakshina - currency coins).
  • Read the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha
  • Always sing Aarti of the lord at the end.
  • Break the fast after sighting the Moon and offering Arghya to Chandra Dev.
