On the day of Vijaydashami, the word "Vijaydashami" signifies vijay or victory as King Rama, an avatar of God Vishnu, killed Ravana, the 10-headed demon king. Every year huge effigies of Ravana along with his brother Kumbhkaran and Ravana's son Meghnad are burned marking the end of evil. Vijaydashmi’s true message means that good will always vanquish evil. In the whole of India and also world where Hindu population is significant, the effigies of Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad are burned on this day to signify the destruction of evil, along with fireworks.

Bengalis observe Bijoya Dashami on the same day as Vijaydashami that marks the tenth day of Durga puja. Goddess Durga idols worshipped for 9 days during Navratri and Durga Puja are carried in processions and immersed in the river. Married women also smear vermilion on each other’s faces.
