Vijayadashami or Dussehra is Lord Rama's Victory Over Ravana and Goddess Durga's victory over Mahishasura

Vijayadashami also known as Dussehra or Dasara is celebrated as victory of Lord Rama over Demon king Ravana and also triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo Demon Mahishasura. Vijaydashami is celebrated every year on the Shukla Paksh tenth day in the Hindu month of Ashwin and marks the end of the Navratri festival. Dussreha is celebrated as Dashain in Nepal. Shami Puja, Aparajita Puja and Seema Avalanghan are some of the rituals which are done on Vijayadashami day. The rituals must be done during Aparahna time as per Hindu division of the day.

On the day of Vijaydashami, the word "Vijaydashami" signifies vijay or victory as King Rama, an avatar of God Vishnu, killed Ravana, the 10-headed demon king. Every year huge effigies of Ravana along with his brother Kumbhkaran and Ravana's son Meghnad are burned marking the end of evil. Vijaydashmi’s true message means that good will always vanquish evil. In the whole of India and also world where Hindu population is significant, the effigies of Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad are burned on this day to signify the destruction of evil, along with fireworks.

Bengalis observe Bijoya Dashami on the same day as Vijaydashami that marks the tenth day of Durga puja. Goddess Durga idols worshipped for 9 days during Navratri and Durga Puja are carried in processions and immersed in the river. Married women also smear vermilion on each other’s faces.

Kullu Dusshera and Mysore Dasara are very famous and thousands of people gather to celebrate Vijaydashami.

Vidyarambham Day

Young children are introduced to learning on this day which is often called Vidyarambham Day. The day of Vijaydashami is free from any malefic effects and thus any new work can be performed and started on this day.
