Mata Mangala Gauri, the Goddess for Marital Bliss

Shravana month is the auspicious month to seek blessing of Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri or Parvati. While Mondays in the month of sawan are dedicated to Shiva, the Tuesdays are dedicated to Maa Parvati or Mangala Gauri. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and rest of South India, Mangala Gauri Vrat is also known as Sri Mangala Gowri Vratham.

Significance of Mangala Gauri vrat

The Mangala Gauri fast is observed by married women and especially newlyweds, on each Tuesday in the month of Shravana to get marital bliss. Sometimes unmarried women also keep this fast to get a good husband and have a blisfull and happy married life. Women fast for 16 or 20 tuesdays for Mata Mangala Gowri and Special puja is done for Mata Parvati and women are dressed in all their glory like they wear mangalsutra, bangles, flowers etc.

Mangala Gauri Vrat katha/Story

There was once a merchant named Dharampal. He had a beautiful wife but no son. With the blessings of Maa Mangala Gauri (मंगला गौरी), the got a son but he was destined for short living or alpaayu. The parents then find out a family where the mother kept fast for Mangala Gauri and she had a daughter who was never to be widow. Thus they married their son to this girl and because of the blessings of Maa Mangala Gauri, they managed to get their son live a happy and long life. Dharampal's son lived a life of 100 years. Thus, every women must observe this fast for happy, prosperous, marital bliss and long life of their husband. You can watch youtube for Mangala Gauri video.

In states such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Amavasyant Calendar is followed. In North Indian states such as Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand, Purnimant Calendar is followed. That is why there is a difference of dates for Mangala Gauri Vratam in both calendars.

प्रति मंगलवारे च पूज्ये मंगल सुख-प्रदे।।
तन्मंगलं भवेतस्य न भवेन्तद्-मंगलम्।
वर्धते पुत्र-पौत्रश्च मंगलञ्च दिने-दिने।।

मामरक्ष रक्ष-रक्ष ॐ मंगल मंगले।
