Kartik Purnima, or Karthik Poornima, is the full moon day in the month of Kartik and it often marks the end of the Kartik month in traditional Hindu calendar. Kartik (October – November) is the eighth month in the traditional Hindi calendar and Marathi calendar and comes as the first month in the Gujarati Calendar. Kartik Purnima date is on November 12, 2019. The day of Kartik Purnima is one of the important religious events for Hindus on Kartik Poornima day and you must take a dip or bath in River Ganga or other holy rivers on this day of Kartik Snaan. After dip in the holy ganges, devotees worship Goddess Laxmi and Lord Vishnu.

Kartik Purnima is observed as the Diwali of the Gods or the Dev Diwali. Tripurasura created 3 cities in space and called them together Tripura.Lord Shiva killed demon Tripurasura on this day of Kartik Purnima and thus this day is also known as Tripura Purnima and after this, Lord Shiva came to be known as "Tripurari".

Get 100 times more Punya on Kartik Purnima

People often can be seen on the pilgrimage all over the country and it is considered that if you do daan (donation) to poor, do worship gods and goddesses, do everything good, then you will get the 100 times more punya on the day of Kartik Purnima than on normal days equivalent to 10 Yajnas. Special pujas and rituals are performed in temples across the country and people also observe fast on Purnima day. The Kartik month along with four month long Chatur Maas and Akashdeep festival in Kashi concludes on this day of Kartik Purnima. Some communities also perform Tulsi Vivah and Tulsi Puja final day rituals end on the day which starts with Prabodhini Ekadashi.

Kartik Purnima Mela

Kartik Purnima Mela on the banks of Ganga River at Garh Mukteshwar is a great attraction with a million devotees. It is said that a mere darshan of River Ganga at Garh Mukteshwar will get one Moksha (salvation) and this bathing ritual in Garh Mukteshwar Bridge Ghat in Uttar Pradesh is taking place for more than 5000 years.

Bhishma Panchaka fasting started on Ekadashi day ends on the day of Kartik Purnima. Vaikuntha Chaturdashi fasting and Puja is performed on Chaturdashi Tithi i.e. one day before Kartik Purnima. Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva on the day of Kartik Chaturdashi during Shukla Paksha and offered Him one thousand lotus flowers. On Dev Deepawali or the day of Kartik Poornima, devotees light earthen lamps or Diya(s) in the evening. It is also believed that Lord Vishnu awoke on this day of Kartik Poornima after a long sleep and thus celebration of Dev-Deepawali.In Tamil Calendar, it is known as the Aani Purnima.

What To Do/Not to do on Kartik Poornima

You must not do any violence on this day. Hair cutting, shaving, tree cutting, flower and fruit plucking, crop cutting and sexual activities are prohibited on this day. Lamps are lit at temples and at homes for the entire night, as this is the day of illumination. People light 360 or 720 wicks on this day at the place of worship in hope of getting salvation after death. 720 wicks symbolize the 360 days and nights of the years. It's known as Kartika Diparatna People also light diyas near the holy Tulsi plant, Sacred Fig and Amla. It is believed that this light of lamps help other creatures like fishes, birds and insects in attaining salvation by seeing the holy light.

Kartik Poornima is also known as the birthday of Matsya (incarnation of Lord Vishnu as fish) and the birthday of Vrinda (personification of Tulsi plant). Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati was also born on this day of Kartik Pournami. The day is also dedicated to the dead ancestors, known as Pitr.
