Sawan Shivratri Vrat Vidhi

Before the Shivaratri Vratam, on Trayodashi, it is recommended to eat only once.
On Shivaratri day, devotees should observe full day fast on Shivaratri. You may please go to a Shiva temple and pour the milk and offer bel-patra, dhatura to the Shivalingam. Although food should be taken on next day but nowadays people eat food once in a day and take milk, tea and fruits the whole day. Devotees should seek blessing of Shiva God by praying to him and saying hymns and mantras dedicated to Shiva like "Om Namah Shivay" and "Mahamritunjay Mantra". It is recommeded to keep chanting the mantra "Om Namah Shivay" or "Namah Shivay" the whole day for maximum benefit. It is also recommended to bathe in the evening for doing once again the Shiva puja and break the fast next day after taking bath within Chaturdashi Tithi. On Shivaratri day, devotees must take Sankalp for fasting on Shivaratri and to take food on next day. When you do Sankalp, pray to Shiva for self-determination for the full day fasting and seek his blessings to complete the Shivratri fast without any interruptions. If you can, you can do Shiva Puja during whole night. Shiva devotees must break the fast between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi to get maximum benefit of the Shivratri Vrat. It is believed that both Shiva Puja and Parana which means breaking the fast must be done when Chaturdashi Tithi is prevailing.

Actually, Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi or Chaturdashi Tithi of each month is observed as Shivaratri of the month or Masik Shivaratri or Masa Shivaratri and usually falls a day or two before Amavasi or new moon day so in a year there are 12 Shivaratri days. The 2 most important Shivaratri's of the year is the Maha Shivaratri during February or March which corresponds to Phalguna month and the Sawan Shivaratri during July-August.

Kashi Vishwanath and Kedarnath Dham along with Shiva temples across India arrange special Pujas and Shiva Darshan during Sawan month. Thousands of people visit Shiva temples during Sawan month and perform Gangajal Abhishekam.

Sawan Shivaratri is more popular in North Indian states like Delhi, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar where Purnimant Calendar is followed. In states such as Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu where Amavasyant Calendar is followed, Sawan Shivaratri corresponds to Ashadha Shivaratri.
