When Lord Rama and Vanarasena, the monkey army thought about how they can cross over the ocean to reach Lanka,  Lakshmana told them about a great nearby Sage whom he thought could provide them the way to reach Lanka and come as victorious. The Sage told Lord Rama and others about the Vijaya Ekadashi fasting and its benefits and how they can reach Lanka.

When Lord Ram reached to Samudra (sea), he asked the sea for the help on showing them the correct path to Lanka, but the Sea God didn't reply. The great sage was named Balada Bhaya who was asked by Ram and Lakshman to show them how they can reach Lanka. Saint Balada Bhaya advised the two brothers to observe the Vijaya Ekadashi fast. Upon observing the Vijaya Ekadashi fast, they will definitely come as victorious in any difficulty and obstacle they face on their way to Lanka, said sage Balada Bhaya. Not ony that, he also told that this Vijaya Ekadashi vrat will also help them in defeating the evil powers of Ravana. Therefore, Lord Rama observed the Vijaya Ekadashi fast and this helped him in winning over Ravana as well as rescuing his wife Sita.

Importance/Significance of Vijaya Ekadashi

It is believed that when you observe the fast of Vijaya Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu with extreme faith, devotion and dedication, you will come as victorious over all the evil powers and all the sins of his past and present life are removed. Special powers and boons are showered by Lord Vishnu to overcome the worldly obstacles and evil forces when one fast on this day of Vijaya Ekadasi.

How to observe Vijaya Ekadashi Fast?

 The same rules apply while observing Vijaya Ekadashi fast as with any other Ekadashi. These are as follows:
Bath in the morning, before sunrise (if possible)
Then worship and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu with extreme dedication and devotion.
As this Vijaya Ekadashi fast gives victory, if you follow and observe this fast with true devotion from your heart, you will definitely win.
If you are completely fit, then only fast for the whole day without taking any food or water. However, it is highly recommended to take only fruits, milk, tea on this day of ekadashi
No grains, cereals, vegetables, breads, honey should be taken.
Do not eat rice and non-vegetarian food, eat only vegetarian (satvik) food.
Recite and chant the Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu mantra's and aarti's.
According to "Shastra's",  a person doing the ekadashi fast should not sleep during the night of Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu the whole night.
Every Ekadshi vrat starts from the ‘dashami’ tithi (10th day) and you should not take the last meal (dinner) on the day before ekadashi.
Every Ekadashi vrat gets complete after the sunrise on the 12th day or ‘dwadashi’ tithi.

Putrada Ekadashi is observed two times in a year. Paush Shukla Paksha Ekadashi is known as Paush Putrada Ekadashi and Ekadashi during Shravan Shukla Paksha is known as Shravana Putrada Ekadashi.

Paush Shukla Paksha Ekadashi usually falls in month of December or January while Shravan Shukla Paksha Ekadashi falls in month of July or August as per English calendar. Significance of Putrada Ekadashi

The name Putrada has been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Putr’ which means ‘son’ and ‘ada’ which means ‘giving’. Vedas describe Lord Vishnu as the one who can fulfill all your wishes and desires. So, those couples who pray to Sri Vishnu for a son on this day, it is believed that their wish is fulfilled.

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi fast is observed and celebrated by the married couple who do not have a son for a quite long time after their marriage.

As Shraddha (ancestor rites), a ritual is to be performed only by sons and for the liberation of departed soul, the married couples pray for a male child on the eve of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi (श्रावण पुत्रदा एकादशी).

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat is completed only after listening or reciting Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha. Bhavishya Purana mentions the story of Putrada Ekadashi which is narrated by Lord Krishna to the King Yudhishthira.

In previous times, there was a King named Mahijit who was a powerful and wealthy. But, the king could not have any children even after asking for some ways by the saints, brahmins and sages.

The King finally met a learned sage named Lomash. With his strong divine visions and meditation powers, the sage came to know that the King is not having children because of the sins of his previous birth.

The sage reminded him that in the previous birth there was a time when on a tour he got thirsty and reached a pond to quench his thirst. There was also a calf and cow who were drinking water from the same pond. The King, in his previous birth scared them and himself drank the whole water.

Due to this sin, he was cursed to remain childless. But because of the other good deeds, he took birth as a king. The sage then advised king as well as the queen to worship Sri Hari Vishnu and observe a fast on the Shravana Shukla Paksh Putrada Ekadashi in order to get rid of the sin or the curse.

As advised, both the king and the queen observed a fast of Shravan Shukla Ekadashi, offered prayers to Lord Vishnu, chanted divine mantras and also donated money, clothes and jewelry to the Brahmins. After this, the wish of the couple was fulfilled and they were blessed with a brilliant son who became the heir to their kingdom.

Nirjala Ekadashi is the most important and sacred Ekadashi among all the twenty four Ekadashis that comes in a year. Nirjala means without water and Nirjala Ekadashi fasting is observed without any food or water. As this fasting is Nirjala Ekadashi Vratam, it is the toughest among all Ekadashi's of the year due to a strict fasting rules. Nirjala Ekadashi and also all the Ekadashi's are dedicated to Lord Vishnu. While observing Nirjala Ekadashi fast, Vishnu devotees do not take food as well as water the whole day and the fast is only over the next day after ekadashi.

Nirjala Ekadashi/Bhima/Pandava Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Pandava Ekadashi or Bhimseni or Bhima Ekadashi because of the legend associated with Pandavas and particularly Bhim. Bhimsen, the second brother among Pandava's could not control having food and thus was not able observe the strict Ekadashi fasting. All Pandava's Yudhishthir, Arjuna, Nakul and Shahdeva, along with their wife Draupadi and mother Kunti except Bhim observed all Ekadashi fasting of the year. Due to this, Bhima, got upset and thought that he was disrespecting Lord Vishnu. Bhima then went to met Sage Maharishi Vyasa for his advises and getting answers to his problem. Then Vyasa rishi suggested Bhima to observe the single Nirjala Ekadasi fasting and thus it acted as the compensation for not observing all Ekadashi's of the year. Thus, Nirjala Ekadashi also came to known as Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.

Nirjala Ekadashi Importance/Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi

It is a strong belief that those who fast on this day of Nirjala Ekadashi are received by messengers from Vaikuntha, the abode of Vishnu, after death, and not by Yama, the god of death. It is also believed that Lord Vishnu transformed himself into Ekadashi to make all the humanity get rid of their sins.Observing this fast is equal to going to pilgrimage. The sins of this life and the previous one are considered burned by observing this fast. Nirjala Ekadasi fast helps in getting longevity, happiness, salvation, wealth, and prosperity with the blessings of Lord Vishnu. It is recommended not to fast on this day of Nirjala Ekadashi for those who are undergoing treatments or medications, if one can observe they can have fruits and milk, tea but not any form of atta or wheat and salt. It is a known fact that one should not eat rice on any ekadashi day including Nirjala Ekadasi.

Nirjala Ekadashi fasting falls on Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month particularly in month of May or June. Nirjala Ekadashi falls just after the Ganga Dussehra (which is the appearance or coming up of Maa Ganga on earth on this day). It is also possible that Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi might occur on the same day.

Rules of Ekadashi/Nirjala Ekadashi Fasting

Ekadashi fasting is over on next day of Ekadashi fast after sunrise. It is necessary to observe breaking of Ekadashi fast often known as Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. Not observing Parana within Dwadashi is not seen good. Parana or breaking the ekadashi fast should not be done during Hari Vasara. If Hari Vasara period gets over, then only one should break the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. Hari Vasara is the period of first one fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. Pratahkal is regarded as the most preferred time to break the fast.One should also avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna and if it's not possible to break ekadashi fasting during Pratahkal then it should be done after Madhyahna.

Things you can Do on Nirjala Ekadasi

• Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu early in the morning and also the whole day.
• Listen to Bhagavad Purana or chanting bhajans dedicated to Lord Vishnu
• Light a diya in front of Lord Vishnu and offer Tulsi leaves and flowers.
• Observe a waterless fast for the whole day. If not able to fast the whole day without water, then one can take fruits and tea, milk, water but should not eat salt and "atta" or wheat.
• Prepare Panchamrita, a mixture of five foods: milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar and offer to Lord Vishnu.
• Donate food grains, clothes, fruits, milk, umbrellas, hand-fans, matakas filled with water, to Brahmins.
• Next morning, after bath, donate food, fruits, sherbet, water, milk, clothes etc. and then break fast by drinking water.

Mohini Ekadashi falls on the ekadashi (11th day) during the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of moon) in the Hindu month of ‘Vaisakha’ or the months of April-May. Ekadashi vrat is observed by all staunch Vishnu devotees as it helps in getting rid of the sins committed by a person, including those from the previous births. Lord Vishnu appeared in form of Mohini on the ekadashi tithi, that is why the day was named and celebrated as ‘Mohini Ekadashi’ since then. Mohini Ekadashi is celebrated in the month of ‘Vaisakha’ in Northern India and nearby areas, it falls during the month of ‘Chithirai’ as per Tamil calendar, in the ‘Jyestho’ month of the Bengali calendar and it falls in the month of ‘Edava’ as per Malayalam calendar. Hindu devotees observe this ekadashi to seek divine blessings for living a happy and prosperous life.

Mohini Ekadashi Rituals

On the day of Ekadshi, people observe a strict fast without eating food grains on this day. The Ekadashi fasting starts a day in advance, on ‘Dashami’ (10th day) tithi. The devotee only eats ‘saatvik’ food once before sunset. On the day of ekadashi (11th day), the devotee adheres to complete fasting which continues till the sunrise of ‘Dwadashi’ (12th day). Mohini Ekadashi vrat must be broken by drinking milk the next day.

A person fasting on Mohini Ekadashi vrat needs to wake early before sunrise and takes a bath with Til and Kush. On the ‘dashami’ night, he/she must sleep on the floor. The ekadashi day is spent by offering prayers to Sri Hari Vishnu and doing an all night vigil by singing bhajans and chanting mantras in appreciation of Sri Krishna.

Those who cannot follow strict fasting rules because of their health complications, they are advised a partial fast on Mohini Ekadashi. ‘Falahar’ like fruits, vegetables and milk products can be taken in.This is strict and must be followed. On the day of Mohini Ekadashi or any other ekadashi, consuming rice and products made of rice grains are prohibited even for those not observing fast.

The day of all Ekadashi's or Mohini Ekadasi, is dedicated to Sri Vishnu. Sri Vishnu is offered sandalwood, sesame seeds, colorful flowers and fruits. As a devotee of Sri Vishnu, a person must offer Tulsi leaves to him on this day as Tulsi is very sacred and dear to Sri Narayan.

Guru Vasistha first narrated the significance of Mohini Ekadashi to Lord Rama and to Maharaja Yudhisthira by Sri Krishna. If a person observes the Mohini Ekadashi vrat with complete devotion than the ‘punya’ he gets is much more as compared with visiting pilgrimages, offering charity or even performing yagnas. The observer of this fast can be compared to donating a thousand cows in charity. The observer of this Mohini Ekadashi vrat achieves freedom from the continuous cycle of birth and death and attains salvation. ‘Surya Purana’ mentions in detail the significance of Mohini Ekadashi.

Mohini Ekadashi Story - Mohini Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Mohini avataar was taken by Lord Vishnu on Ekadashi day which was called as Mohini Ekadashi since then. While Samudra manthan (churning of the ocean) was underway, amrit (nectar) came and a dispute emerged between Devtas (demigods) and Daityas (demons) on who will consume it. Sri Vishnu appeared in the form of a beautiful woman, named Mohini. Daityas or demons kept on admiring the beauty of Mohini while she helped the Devtas drink the Amrit. Mohini Ekadashi Vrat was also observed by Shri Ram while he was searching Sita, and also by Yudhishthira during the time of Mahabharata. Legend surrounding Mohini Ekadashi

When Yudhishthir asked Lord Krishna about the most important Ekadashi, he said that Lord Ram in Treta Yug observed the Mohini Ekadashi Vrat. As per recommendations of Sage Vasistha, Sri Ram observed this Vrat when he was searching for Sita. Because of Mohini Ekadashi fasting, Sri Ram was able to overcome all obstacles and bring back Sita after killing Ravana.

Sage Vasistha told about a story which tells the importance of Mohini Ekadashi to Lord Rama. King Dhrutimaan of Chandra Vansh dynasty ruled the city of Bhadravati situated on the banks of River Saraswati. He was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. He was very kind-hearted person and thought of doing good things for all the people. Samana, Dyutimana, Medhavi, Sukriti, and Dhrustabuddhi were the five sons of Dhrutimaan. Dhrustabuddhi, the youngest son was immoral and did mischievous and wrong activities bringing bad name to his family and the society. After repeated corrupt practices of Dhrustabuddhi , his father threw him out of the house. The money he had was soon spent out and now he became a thief. Many times he was caught by the king’s people and released later. As a punsishment, Dhrustabuddhi was thown out of the kingdom. He survived as a hunter in a forest for many years. During the month of Vaisakha, he met Rishi Kaundinya, when the sage was returning to his ashram after taking a bath in Ganga river. As he was near, a drop of water from the sage’s clothes fell on Dhrustabuddhi. Good sense prevailed on him and he touched the feet of Rishi Kaundinya and asked to alleviate him from all the sins he had done. After Rishi Kaundinya's advises, he observed the Mohini Ekadashi Vrat with devotion and dedication. His sins were forgiven and he got a divine body. He was taken to the abode of Lord Vishnu by Garuda after his death.

Things That Must be Avoided On Mohini Ekadashi

Eating rice and barley on Ekadashi day is completely prohibited, as it is considered a sin and it wipes all your good karmas.

Food given by others on ekadashi day must not be eaten, else the good karma's done by your for the whole year gets destroyed.

Tamasic items like meat, alcohol, garlic, onion etc. must be avoided on Ekadashi day, as it encourages bad thoughts in your mind.

Angerness, violence, criticism or any such negative traits must be avoided on Ekadashi day, as it destroys all your good karma's.

Observe total abstinence on Ekadashi for sexual activities.

Parana is "breaking of the fast". Ekadashi Parana is to be done after sunrise on next day of Ekadashi fast i.e. Dwadashi Tithi. Parana must be done within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. It is a sin or a wrong thing if Parana within Dwadashi is not done. Parana should not be done during Hari Vasara. When Hari Vasara period gets over, then only consider for breaking the fast. Hari Vasara is first one fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. The most favourable time to break the fast is Pratahkal. As a observer of Ekadashi fast, one must avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna. If for some reason you are not able to break the fast during Pratahkal, then do it after Madhyahna.

Many times you might have seen Ekadashi fasting is suggested on two consecutive days. For that consider this thing. Smartha with family should observe Ekadashi fasting on first day only. The alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the second day, is suggested for Sanyasis, widows and for those who want Moksha. When alternate Ekadashi fasting is advise for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day. Ekadashi fasting on both days is advised for staunch devotees of Lord Vishnu.

Jaya Ekadashi 2025: Legend of Jaya Ekadashi

Malyavan was one of the singers in Lord Indra’s kingdom or swarag. He was in love with one dancer named Pushpavati. While singing, Malyavan lost his concentration because of his strong admiration and love for her. Upon noticing this for long, Lord Indra became furious and cursed both of them to become peasants on earth and suffer a lot. After this curse, both were born in the Himalayan region and were very poor. They had to wander for their food and living being here and there. The two of them suffered great pains for years until one day which was the eleventh day of the Magh month. On this ekadashi day, they again wandered for their bread and butter but could not find any food to eat and no water to drink for the whole day. They could not sleep during the night also. Fortunately, this was the day of Jaya Ekadashi, which they did not realised and performed the full day fast and took a whole night vigil. Due to this, Lord Vishnu appeared in front of them and forgive their sins and blessed them. After this, both of them returned back to swarag in their original forms

Both of them visited Lord Indra and bowed down. It was a surprise for Lord Indra and when he came to know about Vishnu's blessings, Indra also bowed down to both of them. Lord Indra said, that he himself would bow down to any person who fast on this day of Jaya Ekadashi as the both of them did.

So, the rewards for oberving the Jaya Ekadasi or Bhishma Ekadashi/ Bheeshma Ekadashi fast with full dedication and devotion are far superior than performing various donations, yagnas and any visits to pilgrimages (tirthyatra).

Importance/Significance of Jaya Ekadashi/Bhishma Ekadashi

Fasting on Jaya Ekadashi is believed to get rid of any remorse or grief attached to your sins committed and help in cleansing our souls and achieving salvation (Moksha) after death. Generally Ekadashi day is associated with worshipping Lord Vishnu, but as this Jaya Ekadashi falls in the month of Magh and magh month is dedicated to Lord Shiva, so if you worship the two supreme Lords - Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, it is considered of high importance on the day of Jaya Ekadashi. If any ekadashi falls on a Thursday, it is considered highly auspicious.

The following is an extract from the Skanda Puran:-
Lord Sri Krishna said, “I shall tell you about Jaya Ekadashi. This Ekadashi obliterates all kinds of sinful reactions and demoniac influences that may be affecting the spirit soul. It is known as Jaya Ekadashi, and the fortunate soul who observes a fast on this sacred day is relieved of the great burden of ghostly existence.

Thus there is no better Ekadashi than this, for it truly bestows freedom from birth and death. It is to be honored very carefully and diligently. Therefore one should strictly observe a fast on the sacred day of Lord Hari, especially on this Jaya Ekadashi. A great soul who observes this fast with full faith and devotion has in effect given all kinds of charity, performed all kinds of sacrifice, and bathed in all the Holy places of pilgrimage.

Fasting on Jaya Ekadashi qualifies one to reside in Vaikuntha and enjoy unending happiness for billions of yugas – indeed, forever, as the soul is eternal. One who even hears or reads these wonderful glories of Jaya Ekadashi achieves the blessed merit attained by performing an Agni fire sacrifice - Havan, during which the hymns from the Sama-veda are recited.”

Bhoumi Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadashi is known in regions of Orissa as Bhoumi Ekadashi. In Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, and all Jagannath Temples worldwide, this Bhoumi Ekadasi is of high importance.

Bhishma Ekadasi or Bheeshma Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadasi is known by the names of Bhisma Ekadashi, or Bheesma Ekadasi, in South India, especially in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The significance of Jaya Ekadashi or Bhishma Ekadasi is also because of the fact that Vishnu Sahasranama Stothram (one thousand names of Lord Vishnu) was told by Bhisma while he was laid on the bed of arrows to the Pandavas on this day of Jaya Ekadasi in front of Lord Krishna, and thus the name of Bhishma Ekadashi. And he went to heaven on this day of Jaya Ekadashi.

This time of the Magh month (Feburary month) has various important days dedicated to Bhishma namely Bhishma Ashtami, Bhisma Dwadasi and Bhishma Ekadasi. It is understood that Bhishma Pitamah chose this Magh month this particular time to leave his body, as he was given the boon of "ichha mritu" or self-chosen death.

It is also believed that if you listen to the 1000 names of Lord Vishnu or Vishnu Sahasranama Stothram leads oneself to Moksha.

How to observe Jaya Ekadashi Fast?

The same rules apply while observing Jaya Ekadashi fast as with any other Ekadashi. These are as follows:

• Bath in the morning, before sunrise (if possible)
• Then worship and offer prayers to Shiva and Vishnu.
• It is highly recommended to take only fruits, milk, tea on this day of ekadashi if not able to fast without even taking water
• Avoid taking any grains, cereals, vegetables, breads.
• Eating rice and non-vegetarian food is a strict no.
• Recite and chant the Shiva and Vishnu mantra's and aarti's.
• It is mentioned in the "Shastra's" not to sleep during the night of Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu the whole night.
• Each Ekadshi vrat starts from the ‘dashami’ tithi (10th day) and it is often said not to eat the last meal (dinner) on the day before ekadashi.
• Each Ekadashi fast gets completed after the sunrise of ‘dwadashi’ tithi (12th day).
• Do not apply oil on the body on the day of ekadashi.

-Rub paste of sesame seeds on your body
-Offer into the fire these sesame seeds when performing Yagna
-Eat food that includes sesame seeds

This Ekadashi day is given the name as Sat-Tila or Shattila ekadashi as it is considered that if one donates Til (Sesame) seeds on this ekadashi day, it will help in removing the sins he/she has committed. This Shattila Ekadashi helps in controlling one's senses, get rid of negativity like anger, ego, negative thoughts, any gossips and help in attaining salvation or moksha. The importance or significance of this ekadashi also holds true when one takes bath in water that has been mixed with til (sesame seeds) and also offer water mixed with sesame seeds to dead ancestors on this day of Shattila Ekadashi. These seasame seeds must be given in charity or feed the hungry with food made with til. Sat-tila Ekadasi occurs in winter season or Magh month in North Indian states and Paush in other regions. The food made with til or Sesame seeds is highly beneficial to the body when eaten. Rice or any food that has rice grains as ingredients must be avoided. Some people eat some sesame seeds on this day.

Yogini Ekadashi 2024 Date

Ekadashi' holds great importance in Hindu religion. While there are 24 Ekadashis in a year and sometimes it is 26, 'Yogini Ekadashi' is observed with much devotion. Yogini Ekadashi comes between 'Nirjala Ekadashi' and 'Devshayani Ekadashi' and falls during 'Krishna Paksha' of 'Ashadha' month as per the North Indian calendar and during 'Krishna Paksha' of 'Jyeshtha' month as per South Indian calendar. The day of Ekadashi is dedicated to worshipping Sri Vishnu to seek his blessings. 

Significance of Yogini Ekadashi

On this day, people fast and perform puja to get bestowed with the divine blessings of Sri Vishnu. It is believed that fasting during Yogini Ekadashi and remembering Sri Hari Vishnu can purge all past and present sins, and grant all the wishes and luxuries to the observers of this fast. Sri Vishnu Devotees try getting salvation through fasting on this day. One can transcend to Swarga Lok after observing Yogini Ekadashi fasting. Yogini Ekadashi is famous in all three Loks. As per the legend, fasting on Yogini Ekadashi is believed equal to feeding 88 thousand Brahmins. The fast breaks the next day after sunrise, which is called Ekadashi Parana.  

Yogini Ekadashi is one of the most important Ekadashis of the year which helps devotees to get free from different health problems. Yogini Ekadashi falls during Krishna Paksha of Ashadha month and during Krishna Paksha of Jyeshta month according to the South Indian calendar.

As per the Georgian calendar, Yogini Ekadashi falls usually in the month of June or July.

The most preferred time to break the fast is Pratahkal. One should avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna. If due to some reason one is not able to break the fast during Pratahkal then one should do it after Madhyahna.

Yogini Ekadashi 2024 Vrat Katha

As per the legends, once there was a gardener named Hemamali who used to serve his duties in the kingdom of Alakapuri whose King was Kubera. The King was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva and he used to worship and offer prayers to the deity on a daily basis. However, the gardener used to collect fresh flowers from Mansarovar Lake and offer them to him.

One day, when Hemamali went to do his routine work, he got enticed by his wife and neglected his duties. After waiting for a long time, King Kubera sent his guards to find out the reason behind the absence of Hemamali. The guards informed the King that Hemamali was busy spending time with his wife and thus neglected his duties.

In a fit of rage, the king cursed Hemamali and expelled him from heaven. Soon after facing the king's rage, he got separated from his wife and contracted a skin disease. He wandered in the forest in search of food and water and felt guilty for offending the king.

One day while wandering, he met Sage Markandeya. After listening to the story, the sage suggested Hemamali to observe a fast of Yogini Ekadashi and worship Sri Hari Vishnu for forgiveness. As suggested by the Sage, Hemamali observed the Yogini Ekadashi fast and worshipped Sri Vishnu, and as a result, he was relieved from the curse and attained his natural appearance and healthy body back.

Kamada Ekadashi 2024: History & Significance

In a year, 24 Ekadashis are observed, each with its unique name and significance. Kamada Ekadashi marks the first Ekadashi of the Hindu year, celebrated just after Chaitra Navratri and Rama Navami.

According to the Hindu calendar, Kamada Ekadashi occurs on the eleventh day of the Shukla paksha in the Chaitra month. In the Gregorian calendar, this corresponds to March or April.

The Varaha Purana, an Indian epic, narrates the tale of Lalit, a singer, and his dancer wife, Lalita, who served in King Pundarika's court. One day, Lalit became distracted during a performance upon realizing Lalita was absent, causing him to miss a few beats.

Seizing the moment, a serpent named Karotaka falsely accused Lalit to the king of being more attentive to his wife than his performance. The king, swayed by the serpent's words, cursed Lalita to become a ghastly man-eater.

In search of a remedy, Lalita visited Guru Shringi's ashram, where he advised her to observe a fast on Ekadashi to receive Lord Vishnu's blessings. Moved by her devotion, Lord Vishnu lifted the curse from Lalit, restoring his human form. Traditionally, devotees fast on Kamada Ekadashi to cleanse themselves of sins, believing that fasting and praying to Lord Vishnu can alleviate their sufferings.

Kamada Ekadashi, the inaugural Ekadashi of the Hindu New Year, is believed to absolve sins and aid in achieving salvation, breaking the cycle of birth and death. It is also thought that childless couples who observe this fast will be blessed with a child.

Devotees pray to Lord Vishnu on all Ekadashis, and on Kamada Ekadashi, it is believed to grant all worldly wishes of the devotees, with 'Kamada' signifying 'granting of desires.'

Kamada Ekadashi Rituals

On this sacred day, devotees rise early, bathe, and then perform puja. They present yellow garments, prasad, incense, sandalwood paste, tulsi leaves, and flowers to Lord Vishnu. A special bhog is also offered, and chants of Lord Vishnu's mantras and the Kamada Ekadashi Katha, as well as the Sri Narayan Aarti, are recited to honor the deity. The fast is broken the following day during Parana.
