Shravana Putrada Ekadashi 2024 Date
Putrada Ekadashi is observed two times in a year. Paush Shukla Paksha Ekadashi is known as Paush Putrada Ekadashi and Ekadashi during Shravan Shukla Paksha is known as Shravana Putrada Ekadashi.
Paush Shukla Paksha Ekadashi usually falls in month of December or January while Shravan Shukla Paksha Ekadashi falls in month of July or August as per English calendar. Putrada Ekadashi during Paush month is more popular in North Indian states while Putrada Ekadashi during Shravana month is considered important for people in other states.
Benefits of observing Putrada Ekadashi Fasting
As Hinduism gives utmost importance to birth and death rituals and prescribes certain rituals at the time of the death that must be performed by the son only. It is believed that funeral rites must be done by the son and it is must for the liberation of the soul. The son also performs regular Shraddha to please the soul of the dead person either on the Earth or in the Heaven. There are many couples who don't have a children despite being married for long and there are many couples who want a son as they are having a girl child so not conceiving a boy child becomes a misery for couples who believe in the "life after death" concept of Hinduism. It is advised that couples who wish to conceive a boy child must observe Putrada Ekadashi fasting. Ekadashi fasting and Puja is always performed for the worship of Sri Hari Vishnu and seek his blessings.

The name Putrada has been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Putr’ which means ‘son’ and ‘ada’ which means ‘giving’. Vedas describe Lord Vishnu as the one who can fulfill all your wishes and desires. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat is completed only after listening or reciting Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha. Bhavishya Purana mentions the story of Putrada Ekadashi which is narrated by Lord Krishna to the King Yudhishthira.
In previous times, there was a King named Mahijit who was a powerful and wealthy. But, the king could not have any children even after asking for some ways by the saints, brahmins and sages.
The King finally met a learned sage named Lomash. With his strong divine visions and meditation powers, the sage came to know that the King is not having children because of the sins of his previous birth.The sage reminded him that in the previous birth there was a time when on a tour he got thirsty and reached a pond to quench his thirst. There was also a calf and cow who were drinking water from the same pond. The King, in his previous birth scared them and himself drank the whole water.Due to this sin, he was cursed to remain childless. But because of the other good deeds, he took birth as a king. The sage then advised king as well as the queen to worship Sri Hari Vishnu and observe a fast on the Shravana Shukla Paksh Putrada Ekadashi in order to get rid of the sin or the curse.As advised, both the king and the queen observed a fast of Shravan Shukla Ekadashi, offered prayers to Lord Vishnu, chanted divine mantras and also donated money, clothes and jewelry to the Brahmins. After this, the wish of the couple was fulfilled and they were blessed with a brilliant son who became the heir to their kingdom.
