The Dev Deepavali also known as "the Diwali of the Gods" or "Festival of Lights of the Gods" is the festival of Kartik Poornima celebrated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India and is observed on the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartika. Dev Deepawali comes fifteen days after Diwali festival on Kartik Amavasya which is regarded as the darkest night of the year.

Dev Deepawali is a very famous event celebrated every year at Varanasi. Dev Deepawali or more commonly called as Dev Diwali, is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Shiva over demon Tripurasur (त्रिपुरासुर).  Thus Dev Deepawali Utsav is also known as Tripurotsav or Tripura Purnima Snan or Tripurari Purnima which is observed on the Kartik Purnima day.

Devotees take a dip in the holy water of Ganges on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima and light earthen lamps or Diya(s) in the evening on Dev Deepawali day. The steps of all the Ghats on the Ganga river, from Ravidas Ghat at the southern end to Rajghat, are lit with millions of earthen lamps in honour of Maa Ganga. Various Ghats of River Ganga along with all temples of Banaras are lit with millions of Diyas.

Like we celebrate the festival of lights - Diwali, the Dev Diwali festival is the Diwali festival of Gods and Goddesses who are believed to descend to Earth to bathe in the river Ganga on this day.

The tradition of lighting lamps on the Dev Deepawali festival at Varanasi was first started at the Panchganga Ghat in 1985.

People decorate their homes with oil lamps or diyas and colored designs or rangoli on their front doors on Dev Deepawali. Processions of decorated deities are taken out into the streets of Varanasi, oil lamps are set afloat on the Ganga river and firecrackers are burnt at night.

Ganga aarti is also performed in the evening.
