Kumbha Sankranti 2022 Date, Kumbha Sankranti Festival
All twelve Sankrantis in the year are highly auspicious for Dan-Punya activities. While Makar Sankranti is considered as the main Sankranti of the year, the Kumbha Sankranti is also considered equally important. As the name itself says, Kumbh Sankranti is marked on the day when the Sun is in the transit from Makar rashi to Kumbha rashi. The day marks the beginning of the eleventh month in Hindu Calendar.
Kumbha Sankranti & Kumbha Mela
Kumbha Sankranti is also associated with Kumbh Mela which is one of the biggest and the most auspicious religious gathering in the world. Hindus from all over India and even world visit Kumbha Mela which is observed and celebrated once in every twelve years in holy cities of Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik to take holy bath in the river Ganga and pray to the Sun God for happiness and good luck in future. Taking a dip once in a lifetime helps in cleaning oneself of all kinds of sins.
Goddess Ganga is medidated upon for a happy and prosperous life. People donate food items, clothes and other things to Brahmins as well as needy and poor.
Many Hindus all over India celebrate Kumbha Sankranti, but people in the Eastern states India do it with great pomp and joy. Falgun Maas starts in West Bengal and it is known as Masi magam as per Malayalam calendar.
Some time duration before or after each Sankranti moment is considered auspicious for Sankranti related activities. For Kumbha Sankranti sixteen Ghatis before the Sankranti moment are considered Shubh and the time window of sixteen Ghati before Sankranti to Sankranti is taken for all Dan-Punya activities. Taking bath in Ganges especially in Triveni where Ganga and Yamuna converge is considered highly auspicious. Sankranti is known as Sankramanam in South India.
Rituals of Kumbha Sankranti
- On all Sankranti as well as Kumbha Sankranti, devotees should donate food items, clothes and other necessities to needy, poor and Brahmin Pandits.
- Taking bath in holy River like Ganga on this day is considered very auspicious to achieve Moksha.
- Devotee should pray with a deep devotion and meditate to Goddess Ganga for a happy and prosperous life.
- People who cannot manage to visit river Ganga can also take bath in rivers like Yamuna, Godavari and Shipra for removing all sins.
- Offerings given to a cow on Kumbha Sankranti are considered auspicious and beneficial to the person.
- The holy dip taken in rivers is known as Sankramana Snana.

Kumbh Mela was started during the time of King Harshvardhan in 629 CE . Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years at Ganga river in Haridwar, Sangam of Ganga and Yamuna in Prayagraj, Shipra river in Ujjain, and Godavari river in Nashik. People take a dip in these holy rivers, and it is believed that it makes you free from all your sins. It is also believed that one should visit the Kumbh Mela at least once in a lifetime.
