Meena Sankranti is observed on the auspicious day when sun moves from Kumbh Rashi (Aquarius) to the Meena Rashi (Pisces). Sun keeps moving from one zodiac sign to another and stays for a month in each zodiac sign. Meena Sankranti marks the beginning of the last month in Hindu Solar Calendar.
Devotees on this day get up early and take a dip in the holy river like Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati etc. and seek blessings and forgiveness from Sun God or Surya to be freed from all their sins. After that offer Arghya to Surya Bhagwaan, chant Surya mantras and pray and seek good fortune from Surya. Many people do not consume onion, garlic, and alcohol. The sun’s transition from one phase to another makes the day longer and the night shorter.
Meena Sankranti Significance
All 12 Sankrantis of the year are considered highly auspicious for Dan-Punya activities. Some time duration before or after each Sankranti moment is considered auspicious for Sankranti related activities. For Meena Sankranti sixteen Ghatis after the Sankranti moment are considered Shubh or auspicious and the time window from Sankranti to sixteen Ghati after Sankranti is taken for all Dan-Punya activities.
The Sankranti's are divided into four groups named Ayan Sankranti, Vishuva Sankranti, Vishnupadi Sankranti, and Shadshitimukhi Sankranti. However, Meena Sankranti attains a unique importance for Hindus due to the transition of the sun.
Donation of land is considered highly auspicious during Meena Sankranti. Sankranti is known as Sankramanam in South India. South Indians consider Meena Sankramanam to be most auspicious for seeking a wish. Meena Sankranti is also spelled as Mina Sankranti.
