Who celebrates Gauri Vrat?

Gauri Vrat is celebrated mainly by unmarried girls from Gujarat. However, married women also observe this vrat. The Gauri Vrat date begins on Ashadha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi and conclude on Ashadha Purnima Tithi (Full Moon Day) every year. Purnima Tithi also marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Ved Vyasa, the author of the great Indian epic Mahabharata and concurs with Guru Purnima celebrations.

Significance of observing the Gauri Vrat

Unmarried girls observe Gauri vrat to pray to the Goddess and seek her blessings for a compatible life partner. Goddess Parvati had performed intense penance before she was married to Lord Shiva. Thus, women pay an ode to her and wish for a great husband like Lord Shiva.

How to celebrate Gauri Vrat?

Women who observe this fast avoid salt, vegetables and tomatoes. Also, recipes for consumption are made with wheat, milk and desi cow ghee. Some women observe the Gauri fast for over 7 or 9 days. Wheat seeds (Javara) are sowed in an earthen pot on the first day of the vrat and place it on the altar. A garland is also made with cotton wool and women adorn it with sindoor to make a Nagla. The wheat seeds are watered until the last day of the vrat, when women remain awake all night to sing hymns dedicated to Maa Parvati. And on the next day, the germinated grains are dissolved in water. Thus after performing the final puja, women break their fast.
