The paath of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is recited praising Guru Gobind Singh.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the 10th Sikh Guru out of the total ten Sikh Gurus. Guru Gobind Singh was born at Patna, Bihar, India, on December 22, 1666 as per Julian Calendar. As Julian Calendar is out of use and is replaced by Gregorian calendar. Guru Gobind Singh was born on 1st January 1667 as per Gregorian calendar. The Hindu date of birth for Guru Gobind Singh is same when any of the Julian or Georgian calendar is followed.  As per Hindu calendar, Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born on Saptami, Paush, Shukla Paksha, 1723 Vikram Samvat. Thus Guru Gobind Singh birthday either falls in December or January or even both months in the Gregorian calendar. Though, the Guru's birthday celebration is based on the Nanakshahi calendar.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who sacrificed his life for protecting religious freedom of Hindus who were either forced to convert or given death threats by Muslim rulers. Guru Govind became a Guru at nine years of age, thus succeeding his father. His mother's name was Mata Gujri. The teachings of Guru Gobind Singh are of great importance for Sikhs. He was the one who stood against the Mughal Rulers as well as injustice. Guru Gobind Singh Ji took five men from society's lower caste and made them as His Five Beloveds, provided them with extreme courage and devotion to God. Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa, a military force of saint-soldiers after his utter dedication to God, fearlessness and his desire to stand against injustice.

Before his death on 7 October 1708, Guru Gobind Singh made "Guru Granth Sahib" (the Holy book of Sikhs) as the permanent and last Sikh Guru. The Granth Sahib thus became the Eleventh and Eternal Sikh Guru and the teachings as an instruction bu the Guru, the God.

The tradition of covering one's hair with a turban was started by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Khalsa can be seen as the highest order for Sikhs to achieve. Four restrictions are to be followed for Khalsa - Not to disturb the natural growth of the hairs, not to eating meat slaughtered in halal manner, not cohabiting with a person other than one's spouse and not using tobacco or a hookah.

Many powerful spiritual compositions had been made by Guru Govind that inspired spirit in the people. One of his works included the Jaap Sahib, all works can be seen in the holy book "the Dasam Granth". He instructed the Sikhs to regard the Guru Granth Sahib as their teacher. The Guru Granth Sahib is the perpetual guru of the Sikhs today.

India celebrated 350th birth anniversary, or ‘Prakash Parv’ or more commonly called as “Gurupurb” of Shri Guru Gobind Singh on 5th January 2017.
