It is observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya in Purnimanta calendar which also celebrates Shani Jayanti. Vat Savitri Vrat, which is also called as Vat Purnima Vrat in Amanta calendar is observed during Jyeshtha Purnima. North Indian married women observe Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days earlier than women in Maharashtra, Gujarat and southern Indian states . However the legend behind observing the Vat savitri fast is same in both Purnimanta and Amanta calendars. As per the great legend, Savitri tricked Lord Yama, the lord of death, and forced him to return the life of her husband Satyawan. That is why married women observe Vat Savitri Vrat for well-being and long life of their husband.

Vat Savitri Vrat fasting starts on the trayodashi day of Jyeshtha month and ends on the Purnima. The fast is then broken on the fourth day. However, many women now observe the vat savitri fasting only on the purnima day.
