Hindu calendar has two Chaturthi Tithis - one coming up in the Krishnapaksha and one coming up in the Shuklapaksh. Chaturthi Tithi is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the son of God Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Vinayaka Chaturthi fasting is done every month but the most important Vinayaka Chaturthi falls in month of Bhadrapada. Vinayaka Chaturthi coming up in Bhadrapada month is known as Ganesha Chaturthi. Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated by Hindus all over the world as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. As per Ganesh Puran, if you see moon on a chaturthi day, then you will be disgraced someday.

Vinayaka Chaturthi is also known as Varad Vinayaka Chaturthi. As the name itself says, Varad means "asking God for any boon or var to fulfill any desire one has". Lord Ganesha blesses devotees with wisdom, patience, prosperity and good fortune whosoever observes Vinayaka Chaturthi fast.

Ganesha Puja on Vinayaka Chaturthi is done during afternoon which is midday as per Hindu calendar. Below we have given the proces to follow when doing puja.

Vinayaka Chaturthi Puja Vidhi

  • Wake up early in the morning and do bath.
  • Go to nearby Ganesha temple or your inhouse temple
  • Ignite a lamp or diya.
  • Sprinkle or wash Ganesha's idol with Ganga jal.
  • Offer clean clothes to Ganesha.
  • Put Sindoor on Ganesha's forehead and offer Durva as this pleases the deity.
  • Worship Ganesha, his wife's Riddhi and Siddhi along with Shiva and Parvati.
  • Offer Ladoo or Modak to Sri Ganesh.
  • After that, when all puja is done, do aarti for Ganesha.

Vinayaka Chaturthi Fast Date and Time 

Vinayaka Chaturthi fasting might differ for two cities even if those cities are located within same Indian state. Vinayaka Chaturthi fasting depends on sunrise and sunset timings and it is observed when Chaturthi Tithi prevails during midday. Therefore Vinayaka Chaturthi fasting might be observed on Tritiya Tithi i.e. one day before Chaturthi Tithi.
