Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who sacrificed his life for protecting religious freedom of Hindus who were either forced to convert or given death threats by Muslim rulers. Guru Govind became a Guru at nine years of age, thus succeeding his father. His mother's name was Mata Gujri. The teachings of Guru Gobind Singh are of great importance for Sikhs. Before his death on 7 October 1708, Guru Gobind Singh made "Guru Granth Sahib" (the Holy book of Sikhs) as the permanent and last Sikh Guru. The Granth Sahib thus became the Eleventh and Eternal Sikh Guru and the teachings as an instruction bu the Guru, the God.
