Chaturthi tithi is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and devotees observe Sankashti Chaturthi fasting on each Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksh Chaturthi. Sakat Chauth which is observed mainly in North Indian states is the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the month of Magh. Sakat Chauth is dedicated to Goddess Sakat and women observe fasting on the this day of Sakat Chauth for well-being of their sons. 

There are two Chaturthi dates every month. Chaturthi tithi that comes during Shukla Paksha is known as Vinayaki Chaturthi, and the other Chaturthi tithi that comes during Krishna Paksha is known as Sankashti Chaturthi. Sankashti means one who removes problems and obstacles in life and Lord Ganesha is regarded as the one who removes all obstacles from one's life. Thus women observe this fast for the prosperity, longevity, well being and happy life of their sons and husband's problems also goes away. Women who keep the Sakat Chauth fast throughout the day perform Lord Ganesha Puja with Vidhi Vidhan and offer Sesame ladoos to Lord Ganesha as it is believed that Ganesha loves laddoos. Sakat Chauth is popularly celebrated as VakraTunda Chaturthi or TilKut Chauth in some areas of the country.

Sakat Chauth Fasting Significance & Importance

As Chaturthi tithi is very dear to Sri Ganesha, Sakat Chauth is celebrated on the same very day of Krishna Paksha Chaturthi. Lord Ganesha was made from clay and given life by Mata Parvati on the day of Chaturthi. Thus Sakat Chauth Vrat is observed by mothers for the long life and well being of their children. Prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha by the women and her family on the day and Ganesha showers his blessings on the children as well as whole family of women observing this fast. Padma Purana mentions the benefits of observing Sakat Chauth Vrata that has been told by Lord Shiva to Mata Parvati.

Women as well as men can observe the Sakat Chauth fast. It is believed that the Pandav king Yudhishthira was the first person who observed this fast on the advice of Lord Krishna. A temple dedicated to Goddess Sakat can be seen in Sakat village in Rajasthan located at about 60 K.M. from Alwar and 150 K.M. from Jaipur which is popularly known as 'Sakat Chauth Mata' or 'Chauth Mata'. It is believed that visiting Chauth Mata temple on the day of Sakat Chauth is very beneficial for one’s children.

Sakat Chauth fast helps in the prosperity, well being, success, longevity in life for the person who observe the fast as well as the husband of the women along with the children. Moreover, it removes the obstacles in one’s life and also help in countering malefic effects of planet mercury.

Along with Sakat Mata, Lord Ganesha is also worshipped on this day of Sakat Chauth. As Chaturthi is dedicated Sri Ganesha, worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day brings happiness and prosperity.

Sakat Chauth is also known as Sankat Chauth, Til-Kuta Chauth, Vakra-Tundi Chaturthi and Maghi Chauth.

How Sakat Chauth fast is performed or Sakat Chauth Vrat Kaise Kare?

Women observing Sakat Chauth vrat must get up early in the morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Lord Ganesha idol should be bathed or picture should be cleaned in the temple. The Sakat Chauth vrat is observed without taking any food or water throughout the day and the fast is completed in the evening or night after sighting and offering Puja to the Moon. 

Flowers, fruits and sweets are offered to Lord Ganesha and then Ganesh mantras, chalisa, Sakat Chauth vrat katha and Aarti Sri Ganesh Ji Ki is recited in honour of Ganesha. Til, ladoos, gud and modak are some favorite food of Lord Ganesha that is then offered to him.

In the evening if possible, women should again take a bath and offer prayers to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Sakat and Sakat Chauth vrat katha should be recited again. Prayers, Arghya should be offered once the moon is sighted, and the fast is completed after that. Prasad and sweets prepared should then be distributed among the children and other family members.
