History and Importance of Trailanga Swami Jayanti

He did Kali Sadhana after his mother advised him to do so. His mother initiated him to the Kali mantra and performed deep meditation on a Kali temple. After his mother's death in 1669, Sivarama kept her ashes for meditation. He did meditation near a crematorium. He met Bhagirathananda Saraswati after a severe and deep penance for 20 years. Sivarama then moved to Varanasi and led the life of a monk and came to  known as Tailang Swami. He lay down in the waters of the Ganges without drowning, then went under the water for a long time and left without breath. His philosophy and teachings can be found in the writings of his disciple Umacharan Mukhopadhyay. Tailang Swami said, reaching the state without reserve is the nirvana that helps achieve salvation. He died on 26th December 1887.

Celebrations and Rituals of Trailanga Swami Jayanti

Tailing Swami birthday is observed on the Shukla Paksh Ekadashi tithi of the Pausha month when devotees and disciples of Tailang Swami gather and read their teachings and literary work on life. Tailang Swami's idol is worshipped and devotees offer various food items. Charity is also done on this day meaning people share their wealth among the poor and the needy, as Tailang Swami had renounced his wealth for achieving moksha or salvation.

He was always cheerful and happy-go-lucky person like a child and can be seen roaming naked on the streets or the Gange ghats. He talked very less. Many people often came to visit him in order to get rid of their problems. Ramakrishna once said the Trailanga Swami, was an incarnation of the Lord Shiva and a real paramahansa. It is believed that Trailanga Swami has no body perception in him and he can lay very easily on the burning sand which is quite impossible for a normal man.

His fame spread worldwide. He took up a form of ajagaravritti and sat motionless on the day before his death. Devotees could be seen offering water to him as an abhisheka from early morning till noon as a living form of the Lord Shiva. He left for the heavenly abode on the evening of December 26, 1887, Monday. Salilasamadhi was given to his body in the Ganges River in the Varanasi as per the customs of the Dashanami sect.

Legends, Stories and Miracles of Tailang Swami

There are many stories that revolve around the spiritual powers of Telang Swami. As per Robert Arnett writings, Telang Swami’s miracles are well documented and stored. He lived a great life for around 300 years and displayed his awesome powers. He ate less and still was weighing over 140 kg. He could read the people’s mind like a book.

He could be seen drinking poison with no ill effect. There was a time when one of the person who did not believe him wanted to declare him as a scammer. He brought a bucket full with the calcium lime mixture. Telang Swami drank the full bucket without any negative effects on the body. Then he broke his natural silence in order to clarify the law of karma, its reason and effect. This content is the copyright of www.durganavratri.in.

Devotees at Varanasi saw him many times in a sitting position on the water surface of the river Ganges for many days. He disappeared for long periods under the water and then reappeared.

A person gave him white paint instead of milk to break his fast. Trailanga Swami drank the white paint nothing happened to him. But the person who gave him paint had severe stomach pain immediately and could not walk.
Trailanga Swami used to roam around naked and authorities found this disturbing. He was jailed many times but they soon see him sitting on roof of the police station. His non-believers accept that Tailang Swami lived for more than 250 years.

Philosophies of Tailang Swami

His philosophy is available by one of his disciples, the Umacharan Mukhopadhyay. Telang Swami had described the attachment of human to the world, the liberation and the assimilation in God. As per Telang Swami, if someone attained the desirelessness state this world is then altered into the heaven. And he can be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Like this world is a chronic disease and the medicine is the way to detachment from disease.

He said that all the desire senses of the human body are his enemy and the senses which help in controlling are his friend. He described a poor person as the one who is very greedy. He described the Sadhu as one who has no attachment and desire.
