Guru Ravidas (1377-1527 C.E.) was a famous saint of the Bhakti Movement. His devotional songs and verses made a lasting impact upon the Bhakti Movement. Guru Ravidas is also known as Raidas, Rohidas and Ruhidas.
As per historians Guru Ravidas was born during 1377 C.E. at Mandhuadhe in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Some controversy is there on the exact birth date of Ravidas. Some scholars say it was year 1399 when Guru Ravidas was born. Guru Ravidas was born on Magha Purnima day as per Hindu calendar. Thus Guru Ravidas birth anniversary is celebrated on Magha Purnima as per Hindu calendar. His birthplace is now known as Shri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan Mandir, Seer Goverdhanpur, Varanasi which is a major place of pilgrimage for Guru Ravidas followers from communities like Ad-Dharmis, Ramdasia Sikhs, Chamars, Jatavs, and Mochis who are mainly from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
History of Guru Ravidas Jayanti
Guru Ravidas was born in Seer Govardhanpur village, Uttar Pradesh, India into a low caste family who were regarded as untouchables. Guru Ravidas was one of the first people to argue that all Indians must have a set of basic human rights. An eminent figure in the Bhakti Movement, Guru Ravidas taught spirituality and tried to bring forward a message of equality based on freedom from the oppression of the Indian caste system.
Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikh people includes 41 of his devotional songs and poems. Meera bai, well known figure in Hindu spiritualism is believed to have considered Guru Ravidas as her spiritual guide.
Ravidas is considered as the founder of the 21st-century Ravidassia religion. As Guru Ravidas had lived before the first Sikh Guru and his teachings were studied by the Sikh Gurus, Ravidassias believe that Guru Ravidas mut be treated as a saint just like the other gurus.
How is Guru Ravidas Jayanti celebrated?
Nagar kirtan or processions carrying his portrait take place in the streets, mainly in Seer Govardhanpur to celebrate his birthday. Sikh scriptures and Amritbani Guru Ravidas Ji are recited and prayers take place in the temples devoted to Guru Ravidas.
