Narmada Jayanti 2022 Date

Narmada river holds special significance in Hinduism. Narmada Jayanti celebrates the birth or the appearance of the Narmada river on the earth and occurs on Shukla Paksha Saptami tithi in Magha month as per Hindu calendar. Narmada Mata or river Narmada is worshipped on this day that brings peace and prosperity in their life and is believed that by taking a dip in Narmade like a dip in river Ganga, a person gets freedom from all sins. Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh where river Narmada originated, is a popular place to observe Narmada Jayanti. Ever flowing Narmada meets the Arabian Sea after flowing through Gujarat. 

Mother Narmada's Shobhayatra is taken in Madhya Pradesh where thousands of devotees visit different ghats of city singing bhajans and songs of Goddess and take a bath in the holy waters of Narmada. After taking bath, devotees offer deep (lamp), dhoop (incense), pushpa (flowers), haldi (turmeric) and kumkum (vermillion) to the river. Some devotees also light lamps made of wheat dough. In the evening a grand aarti of Goddess Narmada is performed on the lines of aarti performed at famous Ganga ghats of Banaras.

Significance of Narmada Jayanti

As per scriptures, Lord Shiva created the Narmada River to destroy the demons and wash away the sins committed by the Gods. However, the same day of Narmada Jayanti is also celebrated as Surya Jayanti. It is believed that Lord Surya Dev started enlightening the whole world on Ratha Saptami day which is considered as the birthday of God Surya.
