Significance of Panguni Uthiram

Nakshatram Uthiram coincides with full moon on this day and it is believed that most divine marriages took place on this day. The marriage of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, Goddess Deivayanai and Lord Murugan, Goddess Sita and Lord Rama was held on Panguni Uthiram day. This is a special day for divine and celestial weddings.

It is an important festival for Lord Subramanya devotees as on this day, Sri Deivayanai, daughter of Lord Indra who is known as Devasena in North India, married Lord Subramanya. Thousands of devotees visit Murugan temples to respect and honour Lord Muruga. Perur-near Coimbatore, Palani, Kapaleeswarar-Mylapore with a very big procession, Vadapalani Murugan temple are some of the popular temples. In the Arulala Perumal (Varadarajaswami Temple) in Kanchipuram, the Panguni Pallava Utsavam lasts for seven days when the sacred text Hastigiri Mahatmyam (the sthala-Purana of this temple) is read in the 100 pillared mandapa in front of the deity. It is believed that Goddess Parvati in the form of Gowri married Lord Shiva in Kanchipuram and because of this belief this day is also celebrated as Gowri Kalyanam day.

Jayantipura Mahatmya tells about the divine marriage between Lord Muruga and his consorts, Valli and Deivanai. Both Deivanai and Valli were destined to marry Lord Muruga as per Skanda Purana.
