What is Ranga Panchami?

The word ‘Rang’ signifies ‘color’, and ‘Panchami’ means the fifth day, therefore it is known to be celebrated after the 5th day of the Holi festival. Similar to Holi festival, it is celebrated by throwing Gulal and splashing colored water on people. Rang Panchami 2022 Significance

Rang Panchami is a major festival of India especially of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The festival of Ranga Panchami is believed to help in activating the five key elements (Panch Tattva) which supports the formation of the universe. These five key elements comprise air, sky, earth, water, and fire.

As per Sanatan Dharma, it is believed that the body of a human being is also made up of these Pancha Tattva only and the invoking of these elements support the spiritual development of a person.

It is believed that when the holy fire of Holika Dahan is lit, all negative qualities including Tamsic and Rajasic traits are eliminated. These negative things cause hurdles in one’s path to Moksha, which means liberation from the cycle of birth, life and death. So, after these negative traits are gone, one is only left with Sattvic Guna, which is positive in nature. This helps in the path to salvation. As all negativity is eliminated because of the fire, the atmosphere is filled with positivity and divine presence can be felt. Thus, after celebration of this, people play with colours, sing joyous songs and exchange greetings of the day.

In cities such as Indore where Rang Panchami is immensely popular and deeply revered, Holi colors are mixed with water and then poured on others. The local municipal corporation sprinkles color mixed water on the main streets of old Indore for which they used Fire Brigade vehicles earlier for the same purpose. A procession is headed by a water tank with a high-pressure jet, two ceremonial cannons, and a camel circumambulator the town. Everyone in the street gets colored. Thousands of people gather in front of Rajwada, Indore to get colored by the canon. Rangapanchami is an age old festival, which was celebrated during the Holkar reign and continues to be celebrated till date.
