Amavasya Tithi in the holy month of Sawan or Sharvana is observed as Hariyali Amavasya in North India and is considered highly auspicious. Hariyali Amavasya usually falls three days before famous Hariyali Teej and a day after Shravan Shivaratri, which comes on the Chaturdashi Tithi. 

North Indian temples especially in Mathura and Vrindavan, organize special Darshan on Hariyali Amavasya day. Thousands of Krishna devotees visit Dwarkadhish temple in Mathura and Banke Bhihari temple in Vrindavan for special Darshan of Lord Krishna.

Phool Bangla at Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan is famous in the whole world among Krishna Bhakts. Many Shiva temples also arrange special Shiva Darshan on Hariyali Amavasya day.

Shravana month amavasya is known as Hariyali Amavasya in North India where Purnimanta calendar is followed whereas it is known as Ashadha Amavasya in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu where Amanta Lunar Calendar is followed.

Hariyali Amavasya is also known as Haryali Amavas and Hariyali Amas in Gujarat. In Maharashtra, it is known as Gatari Amavasya, Chukkal Amavasya in Andhra Pradesh and it is known as Chitlagi Amavasya in Orissa.

Hariyali Amavasya Puja Vidhi

As with all amavasya's, Hariyali Amavasya is a day dedicated to ancestors. People rise early and bathe. Puja is performed to appease the ancestors, and special food is prepared for the Brahmins. Devotees worship Lord Shiva and pray for his blessings. 

Planting of Trees on Hariyali Amavasya

Planting a plant on the Hariyali Amavasya day and taking care of it by giving it water and fertilizer gives virtue. As per ancient pandits and astrologers, planting saplings on the day of Hariyali Amavasya is expected to give various boons to the person. There is a tradition of planting Neem for health, Banana for children, Tulsi for happiness and Amla for Lakshmi. 

For Wealth: Tulsi, Amla, Bilvapatra and Banana trees should be planted
For Good Fortune: Plant a tree of Arjuna, Ashok, Coconut or Vat should be planted
For Health: Amla, Palash, Brahmi, Arjun, Tulsi and Sunflower plants should be planted
For Happiness: Plant kadamba, neem or rich shady trees should be planted

Performing Rudrabhishek Puja on Hariyali Amavasya

As per Vedic astrology, no auspicious things should be performed on the night of Hariyali Amavasya. As Moon is not visible in the sky, on the day of any Amavasya bad spirits are at their most powerful on this day and thus black magic activities are performed on this day by tantriks. People worship Lord Shiva and Kali to protect themselves from harmful spirits. Many people fast on the day. It is said that by performing Rudrabhishek Puja, one can ward- off evil spirits and negativity.

Married women worship Goddess Parvati with vermilion and then, distribute the prasad. It is believed that distributing green bangles, vermilion, bindi gives longevity to their spouse and also brings happiness in the family. For good fortune, married men also present bangles, sweets to their life partners. These rituals must be completed in the afternoon. People also worship Peepal and Tulsi trees on the day of Hariyali Amavasya.
