It is celebrated as Jyeshtha Purnima in Northern India, and in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and South India, it is known and celebrated as Vat Purnima.

Significance of Jyeshtha Purnima

The third month as per Hindu calendar is Jyeshtha. During Jyeshtha month, the Earth becomes too hot and this makes many of the rivers and ponds becoming dry, or their water level going down.

That's why water requirement in this month increases multiple times as compared to other months. Since ages, festivals like Ganga Dussehra, Nirjala Ekadashi, etc., are being celebrated in the month of Jyeshtha by Hindu's which gives a message on how important water is for life on Earth.

The story of Savitri and Satyavan is also associated with Jyestha Purnima. Savitri made Lord Yama agree to her demand to release the life of his husband (Satyavan) after he died.

Jyeshtha Purnima is also known as Dev Snan Purnima, and Vat Purnima. It is celebrated as Vat Purnima in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Vat Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of Jyeshtha month, when women keep a fast and pray for their husband’s longevity by tying threads around a banyan tree on this day and performing puja by taking a circle around the tree seven times.

Not only on the day of Jyeshtha Purnima but on every Purnima, it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi resides with her husband Sri Hari Vishnu on the Peepal tree. This is why it is said that if a person fills a pot with water, raw milk, and batasha and offer it to the Peepal tree, the person would get easy cash flow.

Also, it is on the Purnima day that arghya is offered to Chandra Dev or Lord Moon Which helps in removing every hurdle coming their way.

Jyeshtha Purnima Story & Importance

The conversation between Savitri and Yama is believed to have happened under a Banyan tree. Thus, worshipping of Banyan Tree is significant because as per Hindu scriptures, the banyan tree represents the trinity of Gods: Brahma, Vinshnu and Mahesh. Thus it's often said that offering prayers to the banyan tree appeases the Trinity of Gods.

Savitri Satyavan Vrat Katha is recited and Prayers are offered to Savitri. Besides Savitri, women also worship Lord Brahma, Yama and Narad on this day. Her husband, Satyavan, is also prayed on this day. It is believed that women praying and fasting on this day are blessed with a harmonious married life and long life of their spouse. Women dress up in bright, apply vermillion on the forehead and wear bridal dresses along with jewellery.

After Jyeshtha Purnima Vrat Puja is completed, it brings a lot of happiness in physical and mental well being of a married woman.
