Ugadi 2023 Date

Ugadi 2023 Date

Ugadi date this year

Ugadi or Yugadi is celebrated as the first day of the Telugu New year by people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. New Telugu Samvatsara, which is cycle of sixty years, begins on this day. All sixty Samvatsara are given a unique name.

In Maharashtra, Ugadi festival is celebrated as Gudi Padwa or the Marathi New Year. Both Ugadi and Gudi Padwa are celebrated on the same day. Ugadi or Yugadi can be said as the New Year of the Deccan region that falls between Vindhyachal Mountains and the Kaveri river which includes the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Goa and karnataka. It is celebrated as the first day of the Shukla paksh of Chaitra month, usually in the month of March or April.

Ugadi is new year as per Luni-Solar calendar. Luni-Solar calendars considers the position of the Moon and the Sun to divide the year into months and days. Whereas Solar calendar considers only position of the Sun to divide the year into months and days. Just because of this reason, Hindu new year is celebrated twice in the year with different names and at two different times of the year. The Hindu new year based on Solar calendar is known as Thapna in Rajasthan, Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra,
Sajubu nongma padwa or Meetei Cheiraoba in Manipur, Samvatsar Padvo among Konkanis in Goa and Kerala, Cheti Chand among Sindhis, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Vaisakhi in Punjab, Navreh in Kashmir, Pana Sankranti in Orissa and Naba Barsha in West Bengal. Chaitra Navratri festival also starts on this day for North Indians.

The day of Yugadi begins with ritual oil-bath followed by prayers. Oil bath and eating Neem leaves are must rituals suggested by scriptures. North Indians don't celebrate Ugadi but start nine days Chaitra Navratri Puja on the same day and also eat Neem with Mishri on the very first day of Navratri.

Ugadhi is not celebrated in Adhik Maas (extra month added after every 32 months, 16 days, and 8 Ghatis). Ugadi is called Chaitra Shuddha Padyami in Sanskrit.

The Lord of the first day of the New Year is considered as the Lord of the entire year. In 2023, first day comes on a Wednesday. Lord mercury or Buddha Greh is considered as the Lord of Wednesday. Thus, Lord of this New Year is Mercury.

Significance of Ugadi or Yugadi

Ugadi festival comes after the sun changes its position from the southern to the northern hemisphere during the Spring Equinox. It marks the beginning of the spring and thus it symbolises new life, new hopes and aspirations. It is believed that Sri Brahma, the creator of the universe, started his work on this day.
