Sanskrit Diwas is celebrated to mark the importance of Sanskrit language, the mother of all Indian languages and the first among the ancient languages spoken in India. Sanskrit Diwas is annually observed on the Shravana Purnima day as per Hindu lunar calendar. Sanskrit Diwas is also known as Sanskrit Day or World Sanskrit Day.

It also falls on the same day as the Raksha Bandhan festival. Sanskrit, the mother of all languages, is one of the world's oldest languages. It appears to have been the earliest language spoken in ancient India.

The day is observed across the country to honor the 'language of the Gods.'Various activities are planned to promote and recognize the language's resurrection as the world's oldest. The major objective of this day is to encourage the mother of all languages which are least spoken by today's generation.

Sanskrit Day was first observed in the year 1969. Various activities, seminar and workshops are organized on the day of Sanskrit Diwas to promote the Vedic language. In current time, the usage of Sanskrit has been limited to only Puja-Patha and academic activities.

By arousing the language and learning it might result in reinventing the language for the next generation. As it consists of the largest vocabulary, it shows the rich culture of the ancient Indian language.
