What is Pitru Paksh Shradh period?

The finest time to perform shradh to departed ancestors in the family is during the Pitru Paksha season. This is a sixteen-day time dedicated solely to shradh and tarpan for the ancestors. The festival lasts from Bhadrapad Purnima to Amavasya in the month of Ashwin (August - September).

What is Dashami Shradha?

Hindus observe the Pitru Paksha to pay honor to ancestors and to pray for departed family members. This day is set aside for performing shradh rites for ancestors who died in the Dashami tithi of any month. During the Pitru Paksha era, the Pitrus (ancestors) are thought to visit their descendants on Earth to accept the offerings they make. In reality, the only way the inhabitants of the ancestral Worlds may exist is through the tarpan and shradh provided by their earthly offspring. As a result, shradh and tarpan can assist satisfy the deceased's appetite while also gaining their blessings for the family's well-being.

Importance of Pitru Paksha Shradh/Significance of Dashami Shraddha


A huge number of Hindu literature emphasize the significance of the Pitru Paksha shradh. It is stated that by participating in these shradh rites, people can atone for thousands of sins done in previous lives, as well as ensure a favorable place after death and live a pleasant life with their families.

Dasami Shraddha is another name for Dashami Shraddha.Dashami Shraddha can be conducted for souls who have passed away on Dashami Tithi. The deceased might have died during any of the Paksha or Lunar Fortnights, such as Shukla Paksha (Bright Fortnight) or Krishna Paksha (Dark Fortnight).

Pitri Paksha Shraddhas are Parvan Shraddhas(पार्वणश्राद्ध), and the best times to execute them are Kutup Muhurt and Rohina Muhurt. It might be done till Aparahna Kala (Post Meridian) is completed.

Tarpan (तर्पण) might be done at the conclusion of the Shraddha. According to the Marandeya Purana scripture, shradha's ancestors would provide health, prosperity, and happiness, and the one who fulfills all the rites is deemed to earn salvation.

Apart from Varanasi, Gaya, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Rameshwaram, Tamil beliefs hold that Mukkoodal, Anbil, Mukkombu, Prayag, and Bhavani are sacred sites to perform Dasami Shradha.

Rituals of Dashami Shraddha:

The individual doing the shraddhas must bathe and wear clean garments, particularly a dhoti and a holy thread.
The performer wears a durva grass ring.
The rites entail several alterations to the holy thread.
Pinda Daan is performed when pindas are offered to the ancestors.
On this day, Sri Vishnu and Sri Yama are worshiped.
Food is fed to cows, crows, dogs, and ants.
On this occasion, Brahmans are given Dakshina and food, as well as some charity and money.
Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita are recited with full family.
