Mahavir Jayanti 2024 Date

'The observance of Mahavir's birth anniversary is known as Mahavir Jayanti. This day, revered as the most sacred holiday for Jains, is celebrated with great fervor. On Mahavir Jayanti, Jain sects including the Digambars, Shwetambars, Sthanakvasis, and Terapanthis unite in commemoration.'

Who is Mahavir?

Mahavir, the last of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras, was born in Kundalagrama, Bihar, in 599 BC. His birth, according to the Hindu calendar, coincides with the 13th day of the Chaitra month, which typically occurs in March or April of the Gregorian calendar. The son of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala, he was christened Vardhaman by his parents and spent his youth as a prince. He is revered as the final Tirthankara, a teaching god who imparts dharma.

At the age of 30, Mahavir renounced his throne and worldly possessions to embark on a spiritual journey. For 12 years, he lived as an ascetic, detached from all material pleasures, engaging in meditation and rigorous asceticism until he attained enlightenment. Mahavir, also known as Vardhamana, passed away in 527 BC at the age of 72, after establishing the fundamental principles of Jainism.

Why is Mahavir Jayanti celebrated?

Mahavir led an ascetic life, engaging deeply in meditation and rigorous penance. His bravery and laudable deeds earned him the epithet 'Mahavir'. Lord Mahavir spent his remaining years spreading the truth about spiritual liberation. He educated his disciples on the principle of non-violence and introduced them to the notion of salvation. Consequently, Mahavir Jayanti is observed annually to honor his teachings and the principles of Jainism.

How is the festival celebrated?

'During Mahavir Jayanti, Jain adherents express their reverence by visiting lavishly flower-and-flag adorned temples. They perform a ceremonial anointment known as abhisheka on Mahavir's idols. These idols are then paraded on a chariot by the faithful in a procession termed rath yatra. Along the route, religious verses are chanted as devotees pray for his blessings to lead a healthy and prosperous life. They also partake in numerous charitable activities, giving back to the community and spreading goodwill. Additionally, on this auspicious day, Jains partake in various charitable deeds.'
