Phalguna Purnima 2023 Date

Phalguna Purnima 2023 Date

Full moon day or Purnima that comes up in the month of Phalguna is known as Phalguna Purnima. Full moon days in Hindu calendar are known as Purnima or Poornmashi in North Indian states, Pournami in South Indian states and Poonam in Gujarat. All Purnima days are significant as Purnima days either coincides with important festivals or Jayanti days in the Hindu calendar.

Many families not only in India but the whole world traditionally observe a day long fast, worship Chandra Devta or Moon God and Sri Vishnu, perform Satya Narayana Puja and read or listen to SatyaNarayan Katha on Purnimasi days in the year. On the day of Phalguna Purnima Vrat, reciting of the Gayatri mantra and “Om Namo Narayana” mantra for 1008 times in one go is termed as highly auspicious.

Holi Purnima and Vasant Purnima

Holi the one of the most significant and popular Hindu festivals observed on the day of Falguni Purnima which is the last Purnima of the Hindu year and is commonly known as Holi Purnima. The day also coincides with Lakshmi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Phalguna Purnima is also known as Vasanta Purnima, as this Purnima coincides with Vasanta Ritu.

Kama Dahanam, Kaman Pandigai and Kamuni Panduga

Phalguna Purnima is observed as Kama Dahanam in South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. The rituals of Kama Dahanam are same that of Holika Dahan but the legend associated with Kama Dahanam is different than legend of Holika Dahan. Generally Holi is considered as North Indian festival but it is also observed as Kaman Pandigai in Tamil Nadu and Kamuni Panduga in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Dol Purnima 2022

Dol Purnima is observed during Phalguna Purnima in West Bengal and Orissa. The festival of Dol Purnima is dedicated to Sri Krishna. The procession of Lord Krishna is taken through streets and devotees play Holi with Sri Krishna on this day.

Phalguna Purnima also coincides with the birth anniversary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Thus this day of Falguna Purnima is very important for Gaudiya Vaishnava(s).

Phalguna Purnima Story

As per Narada Purana, the story is about Asura Hiranyakashipu and his sister Holika. She sat on fire to kill Sri Vishnu’s disciple and Hiranyakashipu’ son, Prahlada. With Sri Hari Vishnu's grace, Prahlada stayed safe whereas Holika herself was killed in the fire inspite of the fact that she had a boon that fire could not harm her. Thus it has become a tradition that on the day of Phalguna Purnima, Holika is created with wood and cow dung cake and the Holika Dahan is performed ritually as per auspicious time. At the time of Holika Dahan people must take time to remember Sri Vishnu and Bhakt Prahlada.
