When is the best time to tie Rakhi?

The best time to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is at Aparahna time which is late afternoon as per Hindu division of the day. If Aparahna time is not available on a particular day, then Pradosh time is also considered the suitable time to perform rituals related to Raksha Bandhan.

Raksha Bandhan rituals must not be performed during Bhadra time. Bhadra is an evil time which must be avoided for all auspicious works. Vratraj, ancient Hindu text advises that Bhadra time must be avoided to tie Rakhi during Raksha Bandhan festival. Bhadra prevails during first half of Purnima Tithi. Thus one must wait for Bhadra to get over before starting any auspicious work including tying Rakhi on brother/sister hand. North Indians don't consider Bhadra time and instead tie Rakhi in the morning which is not suitable time to do it. Everybody must avoid the Bhadra Muhurat while performing Rakhi rituals.
