Varalakshmi Puja Vidhi
Varalakshmi Puja Vidhi is similar to Maha Lakshmi Puja done on Diwali. There are some Puja steps and also mantra for Dorak and Vayana. Dorak is the sacred thread tied during Varalakshmi Puja and Vayana is the sweets offered to Varalakshmi.Varalakshmi Vratam Rituals
Varalakshmi vratam preparation starts a day earlier that is a Thursday. Varalakshmi Vratam puja requirements are collected on that day. On Varalakshmi vratam day which is Friday, Varalakshmi devotees rise early in the morning before Sunrise that is ‘Brahma Muhurtham’. After bathing, house is cleaned and a beautiful ‘kolam’ (rangoli) is decorated at place where Varalakshmi puja is to be performed. After that a ‘Kalasha’ is prepared, mostly a silver or bronze pot. The pot is cleaned and smeared with sandalwood paste. A ‘swastika’ symbol is then drawn on the Kalasha. The Kalasha is then filled with water or raw rice, one lime, coins, beetle nut and five different kinds of leaves. A clean cloth is tied on the neck of the Kalasha and mango leaves are put on the above side. A coconut alongwith turmeric is used to cover the mouth of the Kalasha. A picture of Goddess Lakshmi is pasted or drawn with turmeric powder on the coconut. The Kalasha now symbolises Goddess Varalakshmi and the devotee worships her with full devotion.
The Kalasha is placed on the heap of rice. First Lord Ganesha is worshipped. Then ‘Lakshmi Sahasranamam’ is recited in front of the Goddess. Special sweets made at home are offered to the Goddess Varamahalakshmi. After full puja, Aarti is performed on the Kalasha . Women tie a yellow thread around their hands while doing puja.
Now a days Readymade Kalasha pots are also available for use in the Varalakshmi Vrat. The water inside the Kalasha is sprinkled all over the house and the rice used is mixed with the rice stored in the house on Saturday.
