Masi Magam, also known as Maasi Makam, is a Tamil Hindu festival celebrated with pomp and fervour in Tamil month Masi which is February-March during Makam Nakshatra by Tamil speaking people not only in India but the whole world. Makam Nakshatra prevails during Pournami or full moon day but that is not correct always. Thus Masi Makam observation is not linked with full moon or Pournami but with Magha Nakshatra. Makam Nakshatra is also known as Magam and Magha.

Masi Magam is also observed as Maha Magham. Magham is one among the 27 Nakshatras. Masi Magam festival is associated with the cleansing ritual, to attain salvation. Temples idols are taken to the seashore, pond or lake for a ceremonial bath in a procession on Masi Magam day. Devotees who comes in the procession take dips in the water body to get rid of their sins. Masi Magam is observed in India and also in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

Masi Magam Significance

Magha’s symbolises a throne, which signifies grandness and recognition. Leo is occupied by the moon and transits Ketu ruled Magha. Maha Magam significantly enhances prosperity, royalty, blessings and high life aims and standards. Planetary arrangements on the day of Masi Magam also help in removal of negativity, sins, ego, hatred and enriches leadership and decision-making skills. 

Scriptural Significance

As per scriptures, Brahma requested Shiva to start his creation from Kumbakonam, a sacred temple city in Tamil Nadu. Lord Shiva found the Amrit filled pot, on a Magha star day in the Tamil month of Masi. Thus, Masi Magham is an ideal day to lead a healthy life, make new goals with the blessings of your forefathers and ancestors. Since Magha star is related to Pitrus or ancestors, a holy dip in waters on this day can win their blessings and remove pitru dosh. The day is ideal to perform the remedies for the afflicted Rahu, Ketu and Kaal-sarp dosh. 

Masi Magam Rituals

Masi Magam is an auspicious day and as Theerthavari ritual (a ceremonial bath given to the deity) is performed. Devotees come and gather near the seashore in the dawn to take a dip in the water and to offer their prayers and respect to god.

Poojas and religious chants are performed and recited as a ritual in the hope of blessings from the almighty. Masi Magham is an opportunity to receive blessings from your ancestors.
