Today is the day of lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan. This is a partial Lunar Eclipse which is seen throughout India. Chandra Grahan starts on 1: 31 AM on July 17 i.e the night of July 16 and comes to an end on July 17 at 4:30 AM.

The partial lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan occurs when the earth rotates between the sun and the moon, but the three are not in a straight line. Today is also Guru Purnima. As per Hindu beliefs, Maharshi Krishna Dwaipayan Vyas popularly known as Maharshi Ved Vyas was born on the day of full moon of the Ashadh Shukla Paksha, he is the adi guru, the composer of Mahabharata and Lecturer of the four Vedas. Puja for Guru Purnima can be done before the Sutak period of Chadra Grahan.

Today after the last partial lunar eclipse on July 16, the third and last solar eclipse of this year will be on December 26, which will be visible in India.

What is partial lunar eclipse?
The partial lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan occurs when the earth rotates between the sun and the moon, but the three are not in a straight line. On the small surface of the moon, the shadow of the middle part of the earth appears which is called Umbra. The shadow of the outermost part of the Earth reflects on the rest of the moon and that is called Penumbra. Thus we see the shadow of the earth in a large part of the moon.

As per scriptures, sutak for Chandra Grahan begins nine hours before the eclipse. Thus sutak time will begin on July 16 from 4:31 PM. Temples get closed in this period as well as during the actual eclipse time.

What are the measures to avoid the adverse effects of eclipse?
The eclipse period is considered inauspicious as per Hindu mythology. People can read Shiv Chalisa in Hindi at the time of eclipse. After the Chandra Grahan time is over, the house is purified with the holy Ganga water. Then after worshipping god, you can do "daan-dakshina" or doing charity.

When is the next Chandra Grahan or total lunar eclipse?
The next total lunar eclipse or chandra Grahan will be visible on May 26, 2021.
