Who is Maa Dhumavati?

The word Dhumavati is made of two words, 'Dhuma' which means smoke and 'vati' which means 'being that', the smoky one.

Dhumavati Jayanti or ‘Dhumavati Mahavidya Jayanti’ as it is popularly known falls on the ‘ashtami’ (8th day) during the ‘Shukla Paksha’ (the bright fortnight of moon) in the ‘Jyestha’ month of the Hindu calendar is celebrated as the day when Goddess Dhumavati, a manifestation of Goddess Parvati, incarnated on Earth. Goddess Dhumavati, who is known to be the seventh of the 10 Mahavidyas is also known to be the most furious form of Goddess Durga. worshipping Maa Dhumavati on this auspicious day, devotees can be relieved from all their problems and sins.

Dhumavati Iconography

Goddess Dhumavati is depicted as an old and ugly widow. She is thin, unhealthy with pale complexion. She is not adorned with jewelry unlike other Mahavidya(s). She wears old, dirty clothes and has disheveled hair.

She is portrayed with two hands. In one of her trembling hands, She holds a winnowing basket and makes either boon conferring gesture known as Varada Mudra or knowledge giving gesture known as Chin Mudra with the other hand.

Rituals during Dhumavati Jayanti

The day is dedicated to worshipping Mata Dhumavati. Dhumavati Mata is worshipped with dhoop, incense sticks and flowers. It is believed that by offering black sesame seeds tied in black cloth to Mata on this day, can grant fulfilment of one’s wishes.
Maa Dhumavati mantras are recited to please Goddess Dhumavati and seek Her blessing for ending all the sufferings in life. After mantra is read, ‘aarti’ is performed.
Tantriks worship Goddess Dhumavati with full devotion to get materialistic things of life.
As per traditions, married women are barred from worshipping Mata Dhumavati for the safety of their husband and sons. They are only allowed a glimpse from far.

Significance of Dhumavati Jayanti

As per Hindu legends, Goddess Dhumavati is associated with all inauspicious things. It is believed that She appeared during the time of Cosmic dissolution. Some Hindu scholars strongly consider that Goddess Dhumavati is the void just prior to creation and post destruction. Goddess Dhumavati is depicted a widow in the form of an ugly old lady seated on a horseless chariot in a cremation ground. Sometimes, she is also portrayed riding a crow. Symbolically, Goddess Dhumavati urges the devotees to look beyond the superficial things and have faith in the Supreme God, from which both the beauty and ugliness arises.

Even though Mata Dhumavati’s appearance is dangerous and scary, She always blesses her children and she came to free Earth from all sinners and demons. It is believed that Saint Parshuram, Rishi Bhrigu and Rishi Durvasa worshipped Goddess Dhumavati for attainment of special powers.  Thus, the original power of angry rishi’s (sages) like Angira, Durvasa, Parashuram, Bhrigu etc. has been given by Dhumavati Mata. Widow, bhikshatan(alms), poverty, earthquake, drought, flood, thirst, crying, widowhood, putrasantap (son's anguish), discord are their real images. The ability to cause damage and destruction by the curse are due to the Dhumavati form of Mata Sati. She is worshipped as a protective deity in some regions of India. Tantrics worship Goddess Dhumavati to overcome all the obstacles in life and also for fulfilment of their desires. Not only on the Dhumavati Jayanti, Maa Dhumavati is worshipped during Gupt Navratri also. She is also referred as ‘Kalahpriya’ for offering the solutions for this world’s Kalah (problems). It is also believed that even a glimpse of Goddess Dhumavati on the day of Dhumavati Jayanti, showers divine blessings on the devotee.

Dhumavati is the elder sister of Alakshmi, the Goddess of misfortune and unluck as per Padma Purana. In characteristics and nature She is compared with Goddess Alakshmi, Goddess Jyeshta and Goddess Nirriti. All these three Goddesses are manifestation of negative qualities but worshipped at special timings of the year.

It is believed that she appeared during the Samudra Manthan or churning of ocean but her behavior is opposite of Lakshmi Maa who also appeared during the churning of ocean.

She resides on the Peepal tree. It is believed that Worshipping Maa Dhumavati helps to stay away from poverty and bad luck. She keeps away all kinds of bad luck and evil forces. It is considered good to worship Mata Dhumavati for those students who are lazy and are not interested in studies.

Dhumavati Origin

As per Pranatoshini Tantra, once Devi Sati due to satiate her extreme hunger swallowed Lord Shiva. Later on the request of Lord Shiva itself, She disgorged Him. After this incident, Lord Shiva rejected Her and cursed Her to assume the form of a widow.

Vat Savitri Vrat 2022 Date, Vat Purnima Vrat 2022 , वट सावित्री व्रत

Vat Savitri Vrat 2022 Date, Vat Purnima Vrat

Most of the festivals in Amanta and Purnimanta lunar calendar come on the same day. Purnimanta calendar is followed in North Indian states, mainly in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana. Amanta lunar calendar is followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat and southern Indian states. But Vat Savitri Vrat usually is an exception. Vat Savitri Vrat is observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya in Purnimanta calendar which also celebrates Shani Jayanti. Vat Savitri Vrat, which is also called as Vat Purnima Vrat in Amanta calendar is observed during Jyeshtha Purnima. North Indian married women observe Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days earlier than women in Maharashtra, Gujarat and southern Indian states . However the legend behind observing the Vat savitri fast is same in both Purnimanta and Amanta calendars. As per the great legend, Savitri tricked Lord Yama, the lord of death, and forced him to return the life of her husband Satyawan. That is why married women observe Vat Savitri Vrat for well-being and long life of their husband.

Significance and Importance of Vat Savitri Puja

The significance of the Vat Savitri Vrat is mentioned in great scriptures and Puranas like Skanda Purana, Bhavishyottara Purana, Mahabharata, etc. Vat Savitri Puja is observed by married Hindu women for the well-being, prosperity and longevity of their husbands. Vat Savitri vrat reminds us of the deep devotion and fierce determination shown by Savitri to win back her husband Satyavan from God of Death - Yama. Banyan tree's root represents Lord Brahma, the trunk represents Lord Vishnu and branches and leaves are Lord Shiva. The Vat tree stands for Trimurtis and those who worship banyan tree are blessed with good fortune. Thus it is believed that the worshipper gets the blessings of all the three gods and grant the wishes for a happy and long life with their husbands. Vat Savitri Vrat fasting starts on the trayodashi day of Jyeshtha month and ends on the Purnima. The fast is then broken on the fourth day. However, many women now observe the vat savitri fasting only on the purnima day.

Vat Savitri Puja

Married women get up early in the morning of Trayodashi day, wears new clothes, new bangles and apply bindi and vermilion (sindoor) on forehead and offer prayers to Banyan Tree or Vat Vriksha. Women eat fruits on the day of the fast. Women offer water, Akshat, Abil, Dhoop, Deep, Kumkum, flowers, fruits, Ganga jal to the Banyan Tree, after that a red or yellow coloured cotton thread is tied around the tree. After that they perform 108 parikrama around the tree. They wish for a happy long life with their husbands and offer prayers to Savitri as well as Vat tree. The story of Savitri and Satyavan is read which is also called Vat Savitri Vrat Katha. Savitri is worshipped as the Goddess of the day and Vat vriksha puja is performed. The fast is completed after offering water to the moon as well as prayers to the great Savitri. The women toucn the feet of their husbands and elder people in the home. Food, clothes and money are distributed to the needy and the poor.

Vat Savitri Vrat Katha (Story)

Click here to read the Vat Savitri Vrat katha in HindiBelow we have given Vat Savitri Vrat Katha in English:

Vat Savitri vrat is being observed by married Hindu women to honour Savitri, the great wife of Satyavan who rescued his soul from Yama, god of death. This is how it goes the story of Savitri and Satyavan. Follow below is the Vat Savitri Vrat Katha:King Ashvapati who was the ruler of Madra Kingdom, and his queen, were childless, once organised a puja in honour of Sun God Savitr on a sage’s advice. After the Sun god was pleased with their devotion, he blessed them with a girl child, who was named Savitri in respect of the Sun god. Savitri led an ascetic life inspite of tha fact that her father was a king. The king asked Savitri to search for a husband for herself as he was not able to find the perfect match for her daughter. Savitri met the son of the exiled blind King Dyumatsena, Satyavan and decided to marry him. As Sabitri informed of her decision to marry Satyawan to her father, Narad Muni came upon and said that Satyavan would die within a year and thus would not be granted with life on earth after that period.

Savitri was persuaded by her father but to no avail. King Asvapati finally agreed to his daughter’s wish. Satyavan and Savitri got married and moved to the forest with her husband where Satyawan lived with his parents. She gave up her richness and royalty to match with her husband’s life and chose to live like a ascetic.

Three days before the completion of an year, Savitri started fasting and then followed her husband to the forest. On the day when Satyawan was bout to die, Satyavan, fell off a banyan tree while he was chopping wood. Yama, the lord of death, came to take Satyavan’s soul. Sabitri kept following Lord Yama and refused to go. She followed Yama for three day and nights, after which Yama relented and asked Savitri for wishes except Satyavan’s life. Savitri asked to restore her father-in-laws’ kingdom and his eyesight as the two wishes and that was granted by Yama. Since Savitri kept following Yama, he asked for a boon again. The last wish Savitri asked for was children with Satyavan, he again granted it. But since Satyavan had died, how it could be possible which puzzled Yama. He saw Savitri's sincere devotion and utmost dedication for her husband. Thus, Yama god was impressed and bestowed her husband Satyavan’s life. Satyavan gave up his life under the Banyan tree and again was granted his life under the same banyan tree. Since that was the day, Vat Savitri Vrat is being celebrated and observed by thousands of married Hindu women for the long life of their husbands. Savitri came to be known as "Sati Savitri".

Shani Jayanti 2022, Shani Amavasya 2022

Shani Jayanti 2022, Shani Amavasya 2022

Shani Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Shanidev. Shani Jayanti is also known by the name of Shani Amavasya. Shani Jayanti is observed on Amavasya Tithi during Jyeshtha month as per North Indian Purnimant calendar. Shani Jayanti falls on Amavasya Tithi during Vaishakha month as per South Indian Amavasyant calendar. Actually Shani Jayanti falls on the same day in both type of calendars, only the month name is different. Shani Jayanti coincides with Vat Savitri Vrat observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya in North Indian states.

On Shani Jayanti day, one can perform Hawan, Homam and Yagya to get the blessings of Shanidev. Shani Tailabhishekam and Shani Shanti Puja are performed during Shani Jayanti. To remove the negative effects of Shani Dosha also known as Sade Sati in one's kundali, these Shani puja's are performed. Shani Jayanti is also known as Shanishchara Jayanti, Sani Jayanthi, Shani Amavasya, Shanishchari Amavasya .

About Shanidev

Lord Shani is known as "Suryaputra" or the son of Lord Sun and rules planet Saturn and weekday Saturday. Strong Shani bhakts observe fast to appease Lord Shani and a lot of people can be seen visiting  Shani temples to seek blessings of Shanidev bhagwan. Lord Shani believes in fair justice and if he is impressed by the devotee blesses him/her with good luck and fortune. People, who do not get blessings of Lord Shani, can be seen working hard for years without getting any reward for a long time.

Lord Shanidev carries a sword and sits on a crow is often regarded as the God of Justice. Shani or planet Saturn (a slow moving planet) is a part of "Navagrahas" or "9 planets"  which has a strong influence upon everbody's life, as it's one of the most influential planets and the planet which monitors karma, the giver of good and bad luck. Often people born on a Saturday can be seen getting things done slowly in their life. Shani represents spirituality, discipline, honesty, justice and hard work. If Shani makes a person struggle for something, the results are always positive and the person never is disappointed.

Is Shani a Negative Planet?

Shani is regarded as a negative planet – many people become scared of the planet and its effects. However, this is not an entirely correct as Shanidev is not a negative planet  but a slow one that gives success only through continuous effort, consistent discipline, regular hard work and after so many struggles. Shani blesses or curses a person depending upon that person's deeds in the present and even the past life. On the occasion of Shani Amavasya, people pray to Shani Dev for his mercy and protection and removal of bad omen.

Rags to Riches because of Shanidev

Shanidev delivers happiness and sorrows on the basis of one's Karma. Those who are evil and are involved in bad activities get misfortune and losses. Whereas people who are honest, disciplined and are involved in good activities get big fortunes and blessings of the deity. People who become rags to riches or riches to rags is because of god Shanidev maharaj.

Shani Jayanti is celebrated with much fanfare and devotion for Shani dev. Shani Shingnapur in Maharashtra is one of the main temples associated with Shani Dev and that is why one can see a lot of people visiting Shani Shingnapur in large numbers on this day.

Hanuman Jayanthi 2022

Hanuman Jayanthi 2022

In Tamil Nadu Hanumath Jayanthi is observed during Margashirsha Amavasya  in Margazhi Month. Margashirsha Amavasya or Margazhi Amavasai as per Tamil calendar coincides with Moolam Nakshatram many a time. God Hanumath was born on the day of Margashirsha Amavasya while Moolam Nakshatram was there. Some time, Moolam Nakshatra doesn't coincide with Amavasya day, and then Hanumath Jayanthi day is preferred on the Amavasya day. Tamil Hanumath Jayanthi comes in January or December, though it is different from the Hanumath Jayanti celebrations in North India where Hanumath Jayanthi is called as Hanuman Jayanti and it falls in the Chaitra month full moon day. God Hanuman, also known as Vanara God or the Monkey God, was born on this day and thus people celebrate Hanumath Jayanthi as the birth of Hanuman.

Hanumath Jayanthi is often observed at different times of the year as per the calendar being followed. Hanuman Jayanti that falls on Chaitra Purnima is the most popular and widely celebrated in North Indian states. People send Hanuman Jayanthi wishes in Tamil.

Hanuman Jayanthi is celebrated for 41-days starting as deeksha on Chaitra Purnima and ends on the tenth day during Krishna Paksha in Vaishakha month(April – May) in Andhra Pradesh.

In Tamil Nadu, Hanumath Jayanthi is celebrated in all the Anjaneyar temples in the state. Special poojas are organised and often free laddus are prepared in the temple and distributed to devotees. Special Vadamala programme is held in Pallipalayam Tajnagar ‘Trinetra Dasabuja Anjaneyar’ temple where hundreds of devotees came and worshipped Anjaneyar. Same was the case of Dharapuram's ‘Kadu Anjaneyar’ temple, where grand celebration takes place.

Places where Hanumath Jayanthi is celebrated with utmost zeal and excitement in Suchindram Anjaneyar Kovil (Suvarchala Sahitha Hanuman Temple) near Kanyakumari, three famous Anjaneyar Temples at Mylapore in Chennai and Prasanna Yoga Anjaneyar Temple located near Madras Institute of Technology in Chromepet in Chennai.Hanuman Jayanti is observed on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi during Margashirsha month which is popularly known as Hanuman Vratam in Karnataka.

Lord Ganesha is also known as Vighnaharta, meaning the remover of all the obstacles. Sankashti Chaturthi is the day which is specially dedicated to Lord Ganesha and observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha every month. The one, which falls in the month of Vaishakha is called Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi.

The Chanakra Raja Ekadanta Ganapathi form of Lord Ganesha and the Sri Chakra Peetha are worshipped on Ekdanta Sankashti day.  Devotees seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha by observing the Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat. It is said that Lord Ganesha blesses devotees by eliminating their agonies.

The sighting of the Moon is considered as auspicious during Sankashti. However, Moon sighting is prohibited on the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi Tithi of the month of Bhadrapada, a day regarded to be the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha. It is believed that one could attract Mithya Dosha by looking at the Moon on this day.

Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi fasting not only removes the various obstacles in life but also provides progress and happiness. The fast relieves people of their sins and gives them a place in the Svananda Lok which is an abode of Lord Ganesha.

When Chaturthi falls on Saturday, it is very auspicious and named as Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi. It is believed that people who fast on the day of Sankashti Chaturthi, all their sins are removed and are bestowed with health, wealth, and prosperity.

Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi is one of the 13 Sankatahara Ganesha Chaturthi Vratas of the year dedicated to Sri Ganesha. Different forms of Lord Ganesha are worshipped along with different Peetha every month. The greatness of Sankashti Chaturthi puja and vrat is narrated in Bhavishya and Narasimha Purana. It is also believed that Lord Krishna narrated the importance of Sankasthti Chaturthi to Yudhishthira.

It is the day when Lord Ganesha was declared as pratham pujya and supreme God. Devotees who observe the vrat of Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi, can prevent every problem in life. ‘Sankat’ means problems and ‘hara’ means the destroyer. Abhishekam is the main ritual observed during Sri Ganesha Puja on the day of Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi. It is also believed that Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi vrat relieves the devotees of all their sins and confers a place in Svananda Loka – believed to be the abode of Lord Ganesha. The day of Sankashti Chaturthi bestows the devotees with health, wealth, and prosperity.
