Shravana Purnima 2023 Date

Satyanarayan Vrat

Satyanarayan Puja and Vrat is also performed on Shravan Purnima day. On this day, people worship Lord Vishnu in the form of Lord Satyanarayan and seek blessings from the Lord. The devotees offer Panchamrit, and make prasad (roasted wheat flour mixed with sugar and put banana pieces into that), put Tulsi leaves in Panchamrit and in prasad also then offer it to Lord Satyanarayan.

Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is the day to celebrate the bond of love and respect between brothers and sisters. Raksha Bandhan is also known as Rakhi festival which holds a great significance among Hindu community worldwide. All sisters tie a holy thread known as Rakhi around their brother's wrist and pray for their brother's well being and longevity while brothers take a vow to protect their sisters from evil forces.

Narali Purnima

The day is celebrated as Narali Purnima by Hindus in the western state of Maharashtra, especially around Mumbai and the Konkan Coast. It is held on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan. People offer rice, flowers and coconuts to Varuna God, the god of sea and water as the people who are iving on the Western Ghats believe that their life is only based on sea and thus seek blessings of the deity. Fishermen decorate their boats and bring them near the shore of the sea. Fishermen offer prayers to the Deity Varuna by offering coconut.

Coconuts are offered to the deity as it is considered a symbol of Shiva because of the three eyes of the coconut and offering coconut to deity is the most popular way to seek blessings and show gratitude towards the deity.

Kajari Purnima

Kajari Purnima is celebrated in Central India especially in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. The preparation starts from the ninth day of Shravan Amavasya i.e. Kajari Navami. Women brings soil from the field area and sow barley in the pot on the day of Kajari Navami. When it grows till kajari Purnima, all the women take out a procession with these barley on their heads and immerse in the pond or river. This fast is observed to pray for the longevity of son and other male members.

Pavitropana

People worship Lord Shiva with great devotion and enthusiasm in Gujarat. Offering water to Lord Shiva on Shravan Purnima is considered very auspicious. As part of Pavitopana, cotton wicks are dipped in Panchgavya (cow's ghee, milk, curd etc.) and offered to Shiva.

Amarnath Yatra Ends

As per the Puranas, the holy Amarnath Yatra starts on Guru Purnima and concludes on the Purnima Tithi of Shravan month. ‘Kanwariyas’ also worship Lord Shiva on this holy day by offering Ganga Jal on Shivlingam and end their journeys on this day.

Nag Pancham 2022 Date in Gujarat

Nag Pancham is mainly observed in Gujarat on Krishna Paksha Panchami during Shravan month as per Gujarati calendar. Nag Pancham is observed three days before Krishna Janmashtami. Lunar month starts after Amavasya i.e. with no moon day in Gujarati calendar. Nag Pancham in Gujarat is observed during Bhadrapada month as per Purnimanta calendar followed in North Indian states.

Nag Pancham is usually known as Nag Panchami and observed 15 days before Nag Pancham during Shukla Paksha Panchami in Shravan month in most Indian states.

Nag Panchami Significance

The rituals and customs of Naga Panchami puja in Gujarat are similar to other states. Devotees, on this day, observe fast and worship snakes by visiting anthills and trees where snakes can be found. The most important feature of the Naga Panchami festival is that women offer milk to snakes to seek blessings and protection from evil.

Nag Pancham day is dedicated to Serpent God and people worship snakes as representative of Serpent Gods like Vasuki, Adishesha and Ananta. It is believed that anything offered to snakes on Nag Pancham day would reach the serpent gods. Hence, devotes worship live snakes on the day as representative of serpent gods. It is said that people can get rid of Kal Sarp dosh by praying snakes and it also brings good luck. Devotees observe fast on Nag Pancham and usually break it after Nag Puja.

Mantra Translation - May the snakes who are staying in this world, sky, heaven, sun-rays, lakes, wells, ponds etc. bless us and we all salute them.

अनन्तं वासुकिं शेषं पद्मनाभं च कम्बलम्।

शङ्ख पालं धृतराष्ट्रं तक्षकं कालियं तथा॥

एतानि नव नामानि नागानां च महात्मनाम्।

सायङ्काले पठेन्नित्यं प्रातःकाले विशेषतः।

तस्य विषभयं नास्ति सर्वत्र विजयी भवेत्॥

Mantra Translation - The names of nine Nag Devtas are Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padmanabha, Kambala, Shankhapala, Dhritarashtra, Takshaka and Kaliya. If someone chants the names of nine Nag Devtas regularly every day in the morning, it will give you protection from all evils and make you victorious in life.

Heramba Sankashti Chaturthi Significance

Lord Ganesh devotees keep a partial or day-long fast on this day. The main puja is done in the evening after the moon is visible. The idol or picture of Lord Ganesha is worshipped with Durva grass, fresh flowers, and incense sticks. Lamps are lit, and devotees read the "vrat katha" specific to the month. The one who observes a vrat on this day with sincere devotion and unshakable faith in Lord Ganesha who is also known as Vighnaharta gets blessed by him. The Vrat rituals for this day end with the sighting of the moon. Thus, Moonrise timing is of great relevance. The Chandra Dev (Moon) is worshipped, and Arghya is performed (water offering ritual). As it's believed that Lord Ganesha loves Modak, so on the day of Sankashti Chaturthi, Modaks are made and offered to the Lord as it's one of the favourite eatables of Lord Ganesha. Upakarma means beginning or Arambham which refers to the ritualistic beginning of learning Veda. People from the Brahmins community ritually change their Upanayana thread or the sacred thread also known as Janeyu/Yagnopaveetham (known as Poonal in Tamil) with Shrauta rituals along with learning Vedas on Upakarma day. Upakarma is a Vedic ritual still practiced by Hindus of Brahmin community.

People who follow Yajurveda observe the Upakarma on the full moon day during Shravan month i.e. on Shravana Purnima day and people who follow Rigveda observe the Upakarma on Shravana Nakshatra day in the month of Shravana(Aadi in Tamil). Thus the day to observe Upakarma might differ for the followers of Yajurveda and Rigveda.

Lord Vishnu gave the four vedas to Lord Brahma which were later stolen by two demons Madhu and Kaitabha. Lord Vishnu took the form of Hayagriva, the horse headed human and killed the demons and restored Vedas. It is believed that Sri Hari Vishnu himself sent the demons to Brahma to steal the Vedas in order to curb the pride that Brahma had after learning the Vedas and make him humble. One of the other legend says Sri Narayan compiled the Vedas in Hayagriva form.

Upakarma ritual is mainly done to offer prayers and express thanks and gratitude to those great Sages who gave the knowledge of Vedas and revealed Vedic Mantras to the mankind. The next day of Upakarma is known as Gayatri Japam day.

Brahmins choose the day of Shravana Purnima to start the study of Vedas as the day coincides with Hayagriva Jayanti when Lord Hayagriva appeared for the first time on Shravan Purnima. Hayagriva Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Hayagriva who is horse-headed avatar of Sri Hari Vishnu. Lord Hayagriva is regarded as the god of knowledge and wisdom and who restored all Vedas to Brahma.
